Snap-on Incorporated (SNA) reported third-quarter 2026 results Thursday, and the numbers were not pretty. Earnings and sales both missed Wall Street expectations as the company's Tools and Repair Systems businesses weakened.
CEO Nick Pinchuk didn't sugarcoat it, describing the quarter as "mixed with varied outcomes among our business groups." He pointed to diesel-price pressure on the Tools Group alongside a "record-setting performance" in Commercial & Industrial.
Investors reacted swiftly: Snap-on stock tumbled following the results.
Earnings Miss As Sales And Profit Decline
GAAP diluted EPS fell to $4.64 from $5.02 a year earlier, below the $4.95 estimate.
Net sales declined 0.6% year over year to $1.184 billion from $1.191 billion, missing the $1.249 billion estimate. Organic sales fell 2.8%, partly offset by $25.6 million of acquisition-related sales.
Net earnings declined to $243.0 million from $265.4 million. The prior-year quarter included a $16.2 million, or 31 cents per share, after-tax benefit from a legal settlement.
Operating earnings before financial services fell to $248.1 million from $278.5 million, while margin narrowed to 21.0% from 23.4%.
Gross margin improved 10 basis points to 51.0%, helped by Rapid Continuous Improvement initiatives despite higher material costs.
Commercial & Industrial Offsets Tools Weakness
Commercial & Industrial sales rose 10% to $404.3 million, with organic growth of 7.4%, while operating margin improved to 18.5% from 15.6%. Growth came from critical industries, specialty torque, and Asia Pacific.
Snap-on Tools sales fell 6.8% to $471.5 million, with organic sales down 7.0%.
Management said sharply higher diesel prices led franchisees to reduce inventories despite stable technician demand. Operating margin fell to 18.0% from 21.7%.
Repair Systems & Information sales declined 2.2% to $454.7 million, while operating margin fell to 25.5% from 30.4%.
Financial Services revenue fell 2.5% to $98.6 million, and originations fell 1.3% to $270.6 million.
Cash Flow And Balance Sheet
Operating cash flow was $247.7 million and free cash flow totaled $222.7 million.
Cash stood at $1.67 billion, while total debt was $1.205 billion.
Snap-on expects 2026 capital expenditures of about $100 million and an effective income tax rate of about 22% for the full year.
Looking ahead, Pinchuk said the Tools Group is positioned to improve as current pressures ease, while Snap-on continues to see momentum in critical industries. He also pointed to the company's proprietary databases and customized solutions as drivers of future progress.
SNA Price Action: Snap-on shares were down 6.07% at $346.50 at the time of publication on Thursday, according to market data.
