Space Exploration Technologies Corp (NASDAQ: SPCX) has an AI business growing at a breathtaking pace. The bill for building its computing empire is rising even faster.

The company generated $10.9 billion in revenue from its Super Intelligence (SI) segment in the first nine months of 2026, yet poured nearly $40 billion into capital spending. That gap makes Starlink's role in the business more important than ever.

AI Growth Comes With a Huge Bill

According to SpaceX's third-quarter results, the SI segment generated $10.94 billion in revenue through September, up from $2.28 billion in the year-ago period. Its $40 billion in capital spending was about 3.7 times its revenue and accounted for roughly 83% of SpaceX's total $48.1 billion in capital investment.

The spending reflects SpaceX's push to build computing infrastructure, expand cloud services and scale its AI models and software applications, including Grok. The company reported 1.7 gigawatts of nameplate computing capacity at the end of September, compared with 600 megawatts a year earlier.

That infrastructure could support future growth as SpaceX signs additional cloud services agreements and expands its AI offerings. But the revenue-to-spending gap is an important distinction for investors: capital spending builds assets intended to support future operations, so it is not the same as an operating loss or money permanently gone. The question is how quickly the new capacity can generate returns.

Starlink Is Still the Profit Engine

The clearest contrast sits inside SpaceX's own results. Connectivity, driven by Starlink, generated $2.37 billion in third-quarter operating income, about 85% of the company's total $2.79 billion. The SI segment, by comparison, reported $431 million in operating income, while the Space segment recorded a $7 million operating loss.

Starlink's financial contribution is also growing. Connectivity revenue climbed 69% year over year to $5.25 billion in the quarter, while operating income nearly doubled from $1.19 billion a year earlier. Its consumer subscriber base reached 13.6 million, up from 7.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

The figures suggest SpaceX is running two very different businesses at once: a connectivity operation generating substantial operating income today and an AI infrastructure business demanding enormous investment to pursue a much larger opportunity.

The Return Matters More Than the Buildout

SpaceX says its strategy is focused on capital efficiency and returns on invested capital. That makes execution the key variable: expanding compute capacity is only valuable if customer demand, utilization and pricing eventually justify the investment.

For investors, the risk is not simply that SpaceX is spending heavily. It is whether the AI business can turn that spending into durable earnings without putting too much pressure on the company's broader financial flexibility.

For now, Starlink is a major source of operating income, and SpaceX's AI ambitions make its continued strength even more consequential.
