Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) isn't buying the idea that Washington is simply out of cash. On Saturday, in a post on X, Kelly accused President Donald Trump and his allies of prioritizing their own objectives over the financial needs of ordinary Americans.
"There's always money for what Trump and his allies want, but never enough to make life better for working families," Kelly wrote.
The senator argued that the administration's spending decisions reflected a choice about priorities rather than an unavoidable financial limitation.
"That's a decision," he added, calling on Congress to scrutinize the administration's actions.
"It's the job of Congress to hold this corrupt administration accountable, and I won't stop working until we do," Kelly wrote.
Democrats Criticize Trump's Spending Priorities
Kelly is far from the only Democrat making this argument. In August, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) criticized Trump's economic agenda, arguing that it favored wealthy Americans over working-class families and would cut nutrition assistance and health care while increasing tax cuts for the wealthy and Pentagon spending.
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) criticized Trump over rising gas, grocery and utility prices, arguing that the administration focused on putting Trump's name on airports, buildings and coins instead of addressing household costs.
In May, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) accused Trump of directing federal spending toward political projects, including a "MAGA slush fund" and a ballroom, while failing to provide a serious plan to lower costs.
Previously, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) criticized Trump's reported $12 billion in Iran war spending, arguing that the funds could have supported the Child Tax Credit, housing assistance, lower prescription drug costs, National Parks and the salaries of more than 100,000 teachers and nurses.
The common thread: Democrats say the money exists, but the priorities don't line up with working families. Kelly's latest post keeps that message front and center as the spending fight continues.
