Arm Holdings plc (ARM) stock came under pressure Friday as investors weighed a legal setback in its dispute with Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), concerns over interest rates and profit-taking following a sharp rally.
The broader market showed mixed signals, with Nasdaq futures slipping 0.06% while S&P 500 futures gained 0.17%.
Qualcomm Legal Victory Adds Pressure
Arm's latest pullback follows a jury verdict Tuesday that found the chip designer breached its licensing agreement with Qualcomm.
The ruling marks another setback for Arm in its long-running legal battle with Qualcomm over chip licensing agreements.
In a statement Tuesday, Qualcomm said the jury found that Arm violated its long-standing Architectural License Agreement and intentionally sought to disrupt Qualcomm's business.
Qualcomm also pointed to an earlier court victory, arguing that the latest verdict raised broader concerns about Arm's conduct toward its licensing partners.
However, the jury awarded Qualcomm just $2 in nominal damages and rejected four of its six claims.
Arm maintained that the verdict supported its position, pointing to the limited damages and the jury's rejection of the other claims.
High Valuation Leaves Little Room For Error
Arm's elevated valuation added to investor concerns. The stock trades at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of about 250, leaving little room for disappointing developments.
Meanwhile, interest rate concerns have increased pressure on high-growth technology stocks, which often command premium valuations.
Investors also appeared to be locking in profits following Arm's sharp rally. Despite the recent weakness, the stock has surged about 123% year to date.
The combination of legal uncertainty, valuation concerns and profit-taking has left Arm vulnerable to further selling pressure.
Technical Analysis
Arm remains in a longer-term uptrend, but its recent performance signals weakness.
The stock trades 16.9% below its 20-day simple moving average (SMA) and 10.7% below its 50-day SMA. However, it remains 7.8% above its 200-day SMA, suggesting the broader uptrend remains intact.
The moving average convergence divergence (MACD) indicator has fallen below its signal line, while its negative histogram points to weakening bullish momentum.
Arm's golden cross in April, when its 50-day SMA moved above its 200-day SMA, remains a positive long-term signal. However, the stock must recover its shorter-term moving averages to strengthen its bullish outlook.
The stock has also retreated sharply from its reported June peak of $452.70.
- Key Resistance: $267.50, near the 50-day SMA, could limit a potential recovery.
- Key Support: $238, close to the 200-day exponential moving average of $238.50, represents a critical level for buyers to defend.
A break below support could trigger further selling, while a sustained move above resistance could improve near-term sentiment.
ARM Stock Price Activity: ARM Holdings shares were down 1.83% at $240.32 during premarket trading on Friday, according to market data.
