International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) on Wednesday announced a research collaboration with Siemens Energy AG (SMERY) to advance its next-generation nanostack semiconductor architecture.
The collaboration aims to build upon IBM's semiconductor capabilities and Siemens' expertise in electronic design automation, process simulation, lithography optimization, and advanced manufacturing software.
IBM's Nanostack Architecture
IBM launched its nanostack architecture in June. The three-dimensional, nanosheet-based design enables manufacturers to fit more computing power into smaller chips.
The current 7 angstrom node accommodates nearly 100 billion transistors on a 150mm2 chip, almost double the density of IBM's 2nm node chip, with 50% better performance and 70% more energy efficiency, as well as 40% scaling in SRAM memory.
The collaboration aims to accelerate the development of the manufacturing and design capabilities required for future nanostack generations beyond the current node.
The initiative aims to shorten technology development cycles and scale the architecture for commercial manufacturing.
IBM's Vice President of Silicon Technology R&D, Huiming Bu, said the nanostack architecture with its three-dimensional approach represents the path forward for the logic scaling needed to support AI and other emerging technologies over the coming decade.
The company aims to move its complex nanostack architecture closer to production, which can address the rising power demands currently faced by the overall industry and future AI computing demand.
Earlier in June, IBM said the production could begin within five years, according to Reuters.
