Bitcoin-linked ETFs were among the most actively traded funds Wednesday as a sharp pullback in Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) sent both the ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (NYSE: BITO) and iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (NASDAQ: IBIT) lower.
Both BITO and IBIT were down more than 3%, seeing substantial trading activity, underscoring how quickly investors have been repositioning as Bitcoin retreats from the $87,000 area.
IBIT trading volume reached 35.6 million shares on Wednesday, indicating robust activity and investor interest.
Bitcoin's $87,000 Rejection Is Becoming Important
Bitcoin fell to roughly $83,300-$83,600 Wednesday, down about 3% to 3.5%, after repeatedly failing to break through the $87,000 area. The latest decline has been driven by a worsening macro backdrop.
The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 2002 highs. The U.S. dollar strengthened toward its highest level since April 2025 and Brent crude approached $102 a barrel as Middle East tensions pushed oil prices higher. Rising real yields and a stronger dollar can make speculative assets such as Bitcoin less attractive.
ETF Flows Add Another Layer
Recent spot Bitcoin ETF flows have been mixed.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a $118.9 million net inflow on Tuesday, with IBIT accounting for about $122 million of inflows, according to TFTC ETF-flow tracker. That followed a $89.9 million outflow on Monday, showing that institutional demand has not been moving in a straight line.
The bigger concern may therefore be whether the latest Bitcoin weakness develops into sustained ETF redemptions.
Technical Picture Cautious
The technical setup has weakened considerably in the short term.
For IBIT, Support levels appear to be forming around the $46.80 mark, which aligns with the intraday low, according to market data. Should the price breach this level, it could signal further downside potential, with the next support likely emerging closer to the $42 range, where buying interest may increase.
On the resistance side, the recent high of $47.34 could act as a barrier for upward momentum. If the stock can reclaim this level, it may attract additional buying interest, potentially leading to a test of the upper bounds of its 52-week range.
BITO presents a somewhat more nuanced picture. Its 14-day RSI was around 36.9, also close to oversold territory. However, BITO remained above its 20-, 50-, 100- and 200-day moving averages, with the 200-day average around $10.88.
That distinction matters. The recent selloff has damaged short-term momentum, but it has not yet completely broken the longer-term uptrend in BITO.
Bitcoin itself faces an even more important technical test. Analysts cited by Barron's identify $83,000 as the immediate downside level. A decisive break below it could push Bitcoin toward $80,000, while a recovery through roughly $86,500-$87,000 would signal that buyers are beginning to absorb macro pressure.
For BITO and IBIT investors, therefore, the next few sessions could be less about the ETFs themselves and more about whether Bitcoin can defend $83,000. A rebound above $87,000 would restore the bullish narrative; losing $83,000 could make the recent pullback considerably deeper.
