Butterfly Network Inc. (BFLY) is partnering with Bridge Neurotech to develop a fully non-invasive brain-computer interface using ultrasound technology.
The companies announced the multi-year research and development agreement on Monday, the same day Bridge emerged from stealth. The collaboration operates under the Butterfly Embedded program.
Engineering A Non-Invasive Interface
Bridge plans to utilize ultrasound technology to image and decode complex brain activity directly through the skull. To achieve this, the startup is developing a functional ultrasound imaging platform that relies on AI-based neural decoding.
Bridge believes this non-invasive interface for the mind carries the long-term potential to restore lost physical functions and significantly expand human capabilities. The company also announced its first human research study and is actively enrolling participants.
Licensing Proprietary Technology
The multi-year agreement allows Bridge to license Butterfly's proprietary Ultrasound-on-Chip semiconductor technology and corresponding software solutions. The contract outlines specific payments directed to Butterfly for early technology access and future development milestones. Additionally, Bridge committed to purchasing physical Butterfly hardware to support its ongoing non-surgical interface exploration.
Momentum In The Embedded Portfolio
William Blair said Wednesday that brain-computer interfaces now have the broadest presence across Butterfly's Embedded portfolio following several recent deals. Analyst Steven Lichtman pointed out further momentum within the broader Embedded partner portfolio.
Lichtman noted that Mendaera recently announced the commercial availability of its Focalist system, which integrates Butterfly's technology. This launch represents the first commercialized platform originating from the Embedded division. Mendaera's FDA-cleared Focalist system combines handheld robotics for needle-based procedures with real-time ultrasound imaging and specialized guidance software.
The system operates alongside a custom Butterfly iQ3 probe. Medical professionals utilize this robotic integration for a broad range of procedural use cases, specifically including vascular access, organ access, and regional nerve blocks.
BFLY Price Action: Butterfly Network shares were down 5.27% at $8.24 at the time of publication on Wednesday, according to market data.
