American Airlines Group Inc. (AAL) stock moved higher Tuesday as falling oil prices eased pressure on one of the airline industry's highest costs. A broader risk-on move in U.S. stocks also supported the stock.
The Nasdaq gained 0.82%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.86%. Industrials advanced 1.18% as investors moved back into economically sensitive stocks.
Airlines are highly sensitive to crude oil and jet fuel prices because fuel represents a significant operating expense. Lower energy prices can reduce cost pressure and support margins, particularly when carriers have limited ability to quickly pass higher fuel costs on to passengers.
Oil Prices Retreat As Middle East Supply Improves
Crude oil fell for a third straight session Tuesday, approaching $87 per barrel and its lowest level since early September.
The decline came amid signs that Middle Eastern crude exports are recovering. That has eased concerns about near-term supply constraints.
Treasury yields also retreated. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note eased to about 5.27% after reaching 5.33% Monday, its highest level in 24 years.
Lower yields can support equities by easing borrowing-cost concerns and making stocks relatively more attractive compared with government bonds.
Treasury yields moved lower alongside declining wholesale fuel prices, according to Trading Economics.
Stock Analysis
