Seagate Technology Holdings plc (STX) stock is trading higher during Monday's premarket session after closing 10.21% lower in the previous session.
The stock is rising even as the broader market points lower. Nasdaq futures are down 0.27%, while S&P 500 futures have slipped 0.18%.
Seagate is attempting to recover after Friday's sharp sell-off.
The stock came under pressure after reports that Toshiba plans to double production capacity for hard disk drives used in artificial intelligence data centers by fiscal 2027.
Toshiba plans to invest about 60 billion yen, or $380 million, to expand facilities in the Philippines. The planned capacity increase raised concerns that additional HDD supply could eventually pressure pricing in a market that has benefited from tight availability.
The risk is particularly relevant for Seagate because strong AI data-center demand and constrained nearline HDD supply have supported pricing. Seagate said in January that its nearline storage capacity for 2026 was already sold out.
However, the broader demand backdrop remains strong. AI data centers continue to require more storage, while hard drives remain cheaper than solid-state drives for large-scale deployments.
With no major new company-specific headline Monday, the premarket gain appears to be a rebound attempt following Friday's sell-off.
Seagate's longer-term trend remains bullish. The stock has gained 249.62% over the past 12 months.
It is also trading about 33% above its 200-day simple moving average of $650.71. That keeps the longer-term uptrend intact despite the recent pullback.
The short-term picture is more mixed.
Seagate is trading about 0.8% below its 20-day SMA of $872.51 and 0.6% below its 100-day SMA of $870.66. However, the stock remains 1.3% above its 50-day SMA of $854.72.
That setup suggests the stock is consolidating after its strong run.
The relative strength index stands at 45.81. The reading is neutral and suggests neither buyers nor sellers have a clear momentum advantage.
The moving-average structure remains bullish. The 20-day SMA is above the 50-day SMA, while the 50-day SMA remains above the 200-day SMA.
Traders may watch for a move back above $876. A failure to regain that level could leave the stock vulnerable to another pullback.
Seagate's next major catalyst could come with its estimated Oct. 27 earnings report.
Seagate carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price forecast of $1,094.47. Recent analyst actions include:
The MarketDash Edge scorecard shows strong Growth and Momentum scores for Seagate, but a weak Value score.
The rankings point to a high-growth, high-momentum stock trading at a premium valuation.
That combination can support further gains when sentiment is strong. However, it can also increase downside risk when expectations weaken.
Seagate's weighting in these ETFs means fund inflows or outflows can contribute to buying or selling pressure in the stock.
STX Price Action: Seagate shares were up 1.71% at $863.50 during Monday's premarket session, according to market data.
