Vistra Corp. (VST) stock is up more than 6% in Monday's premarket session after a report said the Trump administration plans to offer the company about $4 billion in loans to fund upgrades at three nuclear facilities.
The financing package would support projects at two Vistra nuclear plants in Ohio and another in Pennsylvania.
Vistra's Perry plant has one reactor with about 1.3 gigawatts of capacity, while Davis-Besse operates a single 900-megawatt reactor. The two-unit Beaver Valley facility has about 1.9 gigawatts of combined capacity.
The scope of the planned upgrades was not disclosed.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright could announce the financing during a planned visit to Vistra's Perry nuclear complex northeast of Cleveland, according to the report.
Trump Pushes To Quadruple U.S. Nuclear Capacity
The potential financing comes as President Donald Trump seeks to quadruple U.S. nuclear generating capacity to 400 gigawatts by 2050 and revive the domestic nuclear fuel cycle.
The Department of Energy is also working to accelerate next-generation reactor development, including demonstration projects tied to the Department of Defense and AI data centers considered critical to national security.
In June, the department launched a pilot program aimed at speeding up testing of advanced reactor designs and is reviewing submissions from potential participants.
Technical Analysis
Vistra's gains come despite a slightly weaker broader market. That suggests the move is being driven more by stock-specific buying than a broad risk-on rally. Nasdaq futures are down 0.21%, while S&P 500 futures have slipped 0.14%.
The stock is also showing signs of improving momentum after its recent decline. At its current premarket price, Vistra is trading about 4.2% above its 20-day simple moving average of $142.35. It is also about 3.5% above its 50-day SMA of $143.31.
However, the stock remains about 4.2% below its 200-day SMA of $154.91. That keeps longer-term resistance in focus.
The moving average convergence divergence indicator is above its signal line, while the histogram is positive. Both signals point to improving bullish momentum.
However, Vistra's 20-day SMA remains below its 50-day SMA. The 50-day SMA also remains below its 200-day SMA. This bearish moving-average structure could create resistance as the stock moves higher.
Traders will be watching whether Vistra can stay above its shorter-term moving averages and break through overhead resistance.
