Seagate Technology Holdings PLC (NASDAQ:STX) stock fell more than 13% Friday even as the broader market moved higher. The Nasdaq gained more than 1%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.91%.
The selloff followed reports that Toshiba plans to double production capacity for hard disk drives used in artificial intelligence data centers by fiscal 2027.
Toshiba plans to invest about 60 billion yen, or $380 million, to expand facilities in the Philippines. The move raised concerns that additional capacity could eventually pressure HDD pricing.
However, the supply picture remains tight for now. Nearline HDD demand has surged as AI data centers require more storage. Seagate said in January that its nearline capacity for 2026 was already sold out.
Solid-state drives offer faster performance but remain more expensive than HDDs. That cost gap continues to support hard-drive demand for large-scale data centers.
Seagate Technical Analysis
Seagate remains in a longer-term uptrend. The stock is trading 24.6% above its 200-day simple moving average of $650.52.
Its 50-day SMA also remains above the 200-day SMA. That typically signals a bullish longer-term trend.
However, the short-term setup looks weaker. The stock is trading 6.9% below its 20-day SMA of $870.60 and 5.1% below its 50-day SMA of $853.95. That suggests recent rebounds have struggled to hold.
Momentum shows some signs of stabilization. The MACD remains above its signal line, while the histogram is positive. That points to easing downside momentum, even though the stock has not reclaimed its key moving averages.
Seagate logged a swing low in July and a swing high in August. Traders are now watching whether the latest decline creates a higher low or develops into a deeper retracement.
The 52-week high of $1,145 remains a major overhead level. However, the nearer test is whether Seagate can reclaim the moving averages clustered in the mid-$800 range.
- Key Support: $774 — an area where buyers previously stepped in and a key level if the pullback continues.
- Key Resistance: $876 — near the 20-day exponential moving average of $877.29 and recent overhead supply.

Recent analyst actions include Argus Research maintaining a Buy rating and raising its forecast to $900 on July 30. Barclays maintained an Overweight rating and raised its forecast to $1,250 on July 30. Morgan Stanley maintained an Overweight rating and raised its forecast to $1,187 on July 29.
