Greenland's rare-earth opportunity has a number that could make it much more relevant to Washington's push to diversify critical-mineral supply chains: 34%.

Greenland Mines Ltd (GRML) President Bo Møller Stensgaard says planned annual NdPr oxide output from the company's Sarfartoq project could represent roughly 34% of all NdPr oxide refined outside China at 2025 consumption levels.

NdPr oxide (Neodymium-Praseodymium oxide) is a refined chemical compound containing two key rare-earth elements used in EVs, robotics and various defense technology.

Sarfartoq's 34% Supply Math

The figure is based on the ST1 deposit, the most advanced part of the Sarfartoq project. Stensgaard says the planned output could represent roughly 34% of NdPr oxide refined outside China during each of the project's nine scheduled operating years.

The broader resource contains approximately 40,700 tonnes of NdPr oxide in the Indicated and Inferred categories, according to Greenland Mines. Stensgaard says that amount is equivalent to roughly five years of all NdPr oxide refined outside China in 2025.

The distinction matters: 34% does not mean Sarfartoq could replace 34% of China's supply. It is a comparison with refined NdPr supply outside China, and the output remains a plan dependent on the project reaching development and production.

Still, the potential scale is significant for a mineral supply chain heavily concentrated in China.

"Greenland has the geological potential to become an important Western source of critical minerals, including magnet rare earths such as neodymium and praseodymium," Stensgaard told MarketDash in the email.

Trump's Greenland Push Meets the Mine

A new U.S.-Denmark-Greenland security agreement reinforces the strategic context. But Stensgaard says the agreement does not fundamentally change Sarfartoq's development pathway.

The company still needs to advance geological work, resource definition, metallurgy, environmental studies, permitting, infrastructure planning, financing and stakeholder engagement.

For investors, that is an important reality check. Strategic importance can accelerate attention; it does not eliminate the work required to build a mine.

The Supply Chain Is Bigger Than the Mine

Stensgaard says there is "no single bottleneck" to building resilient Western critical-mineral supply chains.

For Greenland, he identifies infrastructure, dependable energy, patient project capital, processing and separation capacity and long-term offtake certainty as key challenges. He says the U.S. can play a role through financing tools, strategic offtake, technical cooperation, infrastructure partnerships and policies supporting allied processing capacity.

That makes Sarfartoq's potential more than a question of what is underground. The project has to connect Greenland's geology with the infrastructure and downstream capacity needed to turn rare-earth resources into usable Western supply.

For investors, the next catalyst is therefore execution: resource definition, metallurgy, permitting, financing and credible downstream partnerships. The 34% number puts Sarfartoq on Washington's strategic map; turning that potential into actual supply will determine whether it changes the China equation.
