McDonald's Corp. (MCD) stock fell nearly 6% Wednesday as the fast-food giant outlined new long-term growth and profitability targets at its 2026 Investor Day while acknowledging gaps in restaurant execution.
McDonald's said it is targeting an operating margin in the low-to-mid 50% range by 2030. It also expects free cash flow conversion in the mid-to-high 80% range by then.
Management said during Investor Day that McDonald's is "falling short" when it comes to consistent execution. The company plans to address those gaps through its McDonald's> NEXT strategy.
McDonald's Targets Restaurant Efficiency
NEXT focuses on four pillars. Menu > NEXT aims to improve taste, quality and innovation. Consumer > NEXT focuses on personalization and visit frequency. Restaurant > NEXT centers on simpler operations, restaurant modernization and GenAI-enabled ArchIQ. People > NEXT aims to improve hospitality and consistency.
An executive said ArchIQ could free up at least 50 labor hours per restaurant each week.
McDonald's expects NEXT to deliver about 250 basis points of gross restaurant-level efficiency gains. That could provide roughly $100,000 in annual cash flow benefits for the average U.S. restaurant. The company estimates an approximately four-year payback for franchisees after its support.
Since launching Accelerating the Arches in 2020, McDonald's has built common technology platforms, a single enterprise data foundation and operating systems across more than 46,000 restaurants.
$8.5 Billion In Franchisee Support
McDonald's plans to provide about $8.5 billion in NEXT partnering support through 2036, including roughly $5 billion through 2030. The support will include rent relief and capital funding for restaurant modernization, technology and operational improvements.
From 2027 through 2030, McDonald's expects about $3 billion in annual baseline capital expenditures, based on current foreign exchange rates. It also plans $1.5 billion to $2 billion in cumulative capital partnering support to accelerate Restaurant > NEXT deployment.
Unit expansion is expected to contribute nearly 2.5% to Systemwide sales growth in 2027, moderating to about 2% by 2030.
McDonald's also aims to gain 1.5 percentage points of market share in both chicken and beverages by 2030 while maintaining its leadership position in beef.
CEO Chris Kempczinski said growth would remain flat as inflation continues to accelerate, the New York Post reported.
MCD Price Action: McDonald's shares were down 5.58% at $236.38 at the time of publication on Wednesday. The stock is trading at a new 52-week low, according to market data.
