Sometimes a stock just refuses to read the room. On Wednesday, CrowdStrike Holdings, Inc. (CRWD) rose more than 4% as investors latched onto bullish cybersecurity commentary and the stock's continued technical strength, even as the broader market bled red.
Context matters here. The Nasdaq was down 1.17%, the S&P 500 had shed 0.85%, and Technology was off 0.9%. Against that backdrop, CrowdStrike's move stands out like a green light in a sea of red.
Lands Among Preferred Cybersecurity Names
Ritholtz Wealth Management's Josh Brown and Sean Russo put CrowdStrike on their shortlist of four favored cybersecurity stocks, alongside Palo Alto Networks, Inc. (PANW), Fortinet, Inc. (FTNT) and Cloudflare, Inc. (NET).
Notably absent from that list: Zscaler, Inc. (ZS) and SentinelOne, Inc. (S).
Brown called CrowdStrike "one of the cleanest charts in the sector" and pointed to a post-earnings base around $215 to $220, with the 50-day moving average near $207 as a deeper reference level.
CrowdStrike Technical Analysis
This rally looks driven by stock-specific demand rather than any rising tide. Only two sectors were trading higher Wednesday, which tells you the market wasn't doing CrowdStrike any favors.
The stock also pushed above its previous 52-week high of $250.80. Breakouts to new highs tend to attract momentum traders, and that fresh buying can feed on itself.
CrowdStrike remains in a strong uptrend, trading above its 20-day simple moving average of $225.50, its 50-day SMA of $210.59, its 100-day SMA of $188.64 and its 200-day SMA of $148.83.
Shares sit about 15.9% above the 20-day SMA and 75.6% above the 200-day SMA. That's a sign of serious momentum, though such an extended move can also leave a stock vulnerable to sharper pullbacks.
The MACD remains above its signal line, and the histogram is positive. Both indicators point to continued bullish momentum.
On the levels to watch: resistance sits near $261.44 after the stock cleared its prior 52-week high, while the 20-day SMA near $225.50 represents a key support level.
Analyst Outlook
Wall Street is constructive, if not uniformly euphoric. The stock carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price forecast of $247.06.
Morgan Stanley (MS) maintained an Overweight rating and raised its price target to $254 on Sept. 21. Bank of America (BAC) kept a Neutral rating and raised its target to $260 on Sept. 18. Stephens (STPH) maintained an Overweight rating and lifted its target to $280 on Sept. 18.
MarketDash Edge Rankings
On the MarketDash Edge scorecard, CrowdStrike earns a Momentum score of 98.17 and a Growth score of 97.24.
Its Value score, however, sits at just 0.26. That combination tells a familiar story: strong momentum and growth paired with a premium valuation. You're paying up for the growth story.
Top ETF Exposure
CrowdStrike carries an 8.66% weighting in the First Trust NASDAQ Cybersecurity ETF (CIBR), a 7.50% weighting in the Global X Cybersecurity ETF (BUG) and a 7.60% weighting in the REX AI Equity Premium Income ETF (AIPI).
Because CrowdStrike makes up a meaningful slice of these funds, ETF inflows and outflows can feed directly into trading activity in the stock. When money pours into cybersecurity funds, CRWD tends to feel it.
Price Action
