International Business Machines Corporation (NYSE:IBM) stock edged lower in Thursday's premarket session. The stock remained nearly flat as traders weighed weakness in technology stocks against a steadier broader market.
Nasdaq futures fell 0.43%, while S&P 500 futures slipped 0.02%.
IBM, Lockheed Launch Swiss Quantum Hub
Separately, IBM and Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE:LMT) said Thursday they established a quantum innovation hub at ETH Zurich through an agreement with Switzerland's Federal Office for Defence Procurement.
The Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano will host Switzerland's first IBM Quantum System Two. IBM will operate the system, powered by its Quantum Nighthawk processor. Deployment is expected by the end of 2026.
The hub will give Swiss universities, startups and companies access to quantum computing for research in areas including materials science, optimization and financial services.
IBM and Lockheed Martin also plan joint projects focused on quantum sensing for navigation and additive manufacturing of metallic alloys.
The initiative builds on IBM and ETH Zurich's recently announced 10-year research partnership focused on AI and quantum algorithms.
IBM Tests A Key Technical Zone
IBM has no clear company-specific catalyst driving its premarket move. Instead, traders are watching the stock as it tests a cluster of key moving averages.
IBM is trading 2.3% above its 20-day simple moving average of $234.18. However, it sits 0.1% below its 50-day SMA of $239.80. That puts the stock near an important short-term decision point.
The longer-term picture remains weaker. The stock trades 2.9% below its 100-day SMA of $246.63 and 8.5% below its 200-day SMA of $261.79.
Momentum is neutral. The relative strength index stands at 54.22. An RSI near 50 typically signals balanced buying and selling pressure.
Meanwhile, IBM's 20-day SMA remains below its 50-day SMA, a bearish short-term signal. The death cross formed in March, when the 50-day SMA fell below the 200-day SMA, also remains intact.
Key resistance sits near $241.50, just above the 50-day SMA. Support is around $229. A break below that level could increase downside pressure.
Analyst Outlook
IBM carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price forecast of $258.
Susquehanna maintained a Neutral rating and raised its price forecast to $235 on Aug. 31. Citigroup maintained a Buy rating but lowered its forecast to $245 on July 24. Susquehanna also cut its forecast to $225 on July 24.
The stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of about 21.3 times.
IBM MarketDash Edge Rankings
The MarketDash Edge scorecard shows IBM with a strong Quality score of 79.32. However, its Momentum score is weaker at 17.78.
The stock has a Value score of 25.51 and a Growth score of 41.63. Overall, the rankings point to strong business quality but weaker momentum and valuation characteristics.
For bulls, a move above the 100-day and 200-day moving averages would strengthen the longer-term technical picture. Until then, the stock remains below important resistance levels.
Top ETF Exposure
IBM has a 6.81% weighting in the First Trust NASDAQ Technology Dividend Index Fund (NASDAQ:TDIV). It also has a 3.89% weighting in the iShares Core Dividend ETF (BATS:DIVB) and a 6.83% weighting in the FT Vest Technology Dividend Target Income ETF (NASDAQ:TDVI).
The stock's sizable weight in these funds means ETF inflows and outflows can contribute to buying or selling pressure in the stock.
IBM Price Action
IBM shares were down 0.16% at $239.56 in Thursday's premarket trading, according to market data.
