Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) stock fell more than 1% in Thursday premarket trading as investors turned cautious on large-cap technology stocks. Nasdaq futures slipped 0.33%, while S&P 500 futures edged up 0.04%.
AMD has also delivered a sharp 12-month rally. That leaves the stock more sensitive to changes in risk appetite. In addition, shares are approaching a nearby resistance level that could attract profit-taking.
AMD, Xanadu Launch Open-Source Backline To Speed Quantum Systems
Separately, AMD and Xanadu Quantum Technologies Limited (XNDU) launched Backline on Thursday, an open-source platform designed to speed communication between quantum processors and classical computing hardware.
Backline connects quantum systems with CPUs, GPUs and FPGAs through Xanadu’s open-source PennyLane platform. The companies said it achieved end-to-end classical-to-quantum loop times of less than 3 microseconds.
The platform supports AMD EPYC and Threadripper CPUs, Instinct GPUs, Versal FPGAs and Pensando networking technology.
Backline aims to reduce reliance on proprietary hardware and low-level software frameworks. Developers can control hardware through PennyLane’s Python interface.
The technology could support quantum error correction, optical network routing and high-speed sensing. Backline is available now as an open-source feature suite within PennyLane.
Technical Analysis
AMD remains in a strong long-term uptrend. Shares have gained 226.62% over the past 12 months. The stock also trades about 49.7% above its 200-day simple moving average of $343.86.
The short-term picture is more mixed. AMD’s 20-day SMA of $479.35 remains below its 50-day SMA of $498.59. That bearish crossover points to some near-term consolidation.
Still, AMD trades about 7.4% above its 20-day SMA and 3.2% above its 50-day SMA. That suggests buyers continue to defend pullbacks.
Momentum is also improving. The MACD remains above its signal line, while the histogram is positive. That setup suggests selling pressure has eased.
AMD faces key resistance around $517.50. A move above that level could strengthen the bullish setup. Meanwhile, support sits near $463, an area where buyers previously stepped in.

Raymond James upgraded AMD to Strong Buy on Aug. 25 and raised its price forecast to $641. BMO Capital initiated coverage with an Outperform rating and $550 price forecast on Aug. 21. Argus Research maintained a Buy rating and raised its price forecast to $625 on Aug. 6.

MarketDash Edge Rankings
AMD scores strongly on momentum, quality and growth in the MarketDash Edge scorecard. Its Momentum score stands at 98.77, while Quality is 93.93 and Growth is 95.45.
However, AMD’s Value score is just 3.94. The weak valuation score highlights a key risk after the stock’s steep rally. Premium-priced stocks can face sharper pullbacks when investor sentiment weakens.
Overall, AMD’s Edge rankings point to strong momentum and growth, offset by elevated valuation risk.
AMD ETF Exposure
AMD is a major holding in the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX), with an 8.10% weighting. It also has a 5.86% weighting in the ARK Autonomous Technology & Robotics ETF (ARKQ) and a 7% weighting in the ARK Next Generation Internet ETF (ARKW).
As a result, significant flows into or out of these ETFs can add to buying or selling pressure in AMD shares.
Price Action
AMD Stock Price Activity: Advanced Micro Devices shares were down 1.30% at $514.31 during premarket trading on Thursday, according to market data.
