When Nvidia Corp (NVDA) announced its $12.9 billion acquisition of Hugging Face, the immediate reaction was: of course, another AI power play. But one investor thinks the real prize isn't the models hosted on the platform, but the front door to AI development itself.
Willy Lee, a principal at Neostellar Capital, argues that the deal is less about owning open-source models and more about making sure Nvidia stays essential no matter which models end up winning. "The acquisition is less about NVIDIA owning open-source models and more about ensuring that, regardless of which models win, NVIDIA remains deeply embedded in how those models are discovered, customized and ultimately deployed," Lee said.
That's a subtle but important shift. Instead of just selling the chips that run AI, Nvidia is positioning itself at the very beginning of the developer workflow. Lee describes it as "a strategic position much earlier in the developer workflow while also broadening its exposure beyond a relatively concentrated group of frontier labs and hyperscalers."
Why does that matter? Because the next wave of AI demand might not come from a handful of well-funded labs, but from the long tail of enterprises, startups, and developers building specialized applications. Open models, Lee believes, dramatically expand that pool of potential customers. More developers and more workloads ultimately mean more demand for Nvidia's computing platform.
Hendi Susanto, portfolio manager of the GGTL ETF at Gabelli Funds, sees a similar logic. The acquisition "strengthens its software ecosystem by expanding its presence in open-platform AI software and deepening its strategic relationship with the developer community," he said. He also thinks it reinforces Nvidia's competitive moat, giving it "a stronger platform to compete against increasingly capable, lower-cost Chinese AI players."
Management has said it will keep Hugging Face open and hardware-agnostic, so developers can still choose their preferred models, clouds, and chips. That might sound counterintuitive for a company that sells chips, but it's actually a smart long-term play. By being the neutral ground where AI development happens, Nvidia can subtly push its own software stack—CUDA, NIM, NeMo, and the rest—as developers move from tinkering to production.
Lee puts it plainly: "NVIDIA can use Hugging Face to make CUDA, NIM, NeMo and its broader software stack easier to adopt as developers move from experimentation into production."
So while the headlines focus on GPUs and model wars, the real story might be about owning the starting point for millions of developers. If Lee's thesis holds, the value of Hugging Face won't be in the models it hosts, but in the fact that it's where AI applications begin—and that's exactly where Nvidia wants to be.
