There's a certain magic trick that leveraged ETFs do. They take a stock's daily move and double it, which sounds simple enough. But as any trader who's been burned by a 2X product knows, the magic can turn into a trap if you hold too long. Today, that magic is working in favor of the bulls.
The Direxion Daily TSLA Bull 2X Shares ETF (TSLL) is one of the most actively traded ETFs on Thursday, as investors pile into leveraged exposure to Tesla Inc (TSLA) ahead of the company's closely watched Cybercab event. TSLL traded around 21 million shares in Thursday's session at the time of writing, while Tesla shares were up about 5%. The setup is particularly relevant for short-term traders because TSLL seeks 200% of the daily performance of Tesla stock, before fees and expenses.
That means a sharp move in Tesla can translate into an even larger move in TSLL, making the ETF a popular vehicle for traders looking to capitalize on event-driven momentum without buying Tesla shares directly. But the leverage cuts both ways. If Tesla stumbles, TSLL falls twice as hard. So, what's driving this move, and what should traders watch?
Why Tesla Is Moving TSLL
Tesla is set to unveil its Cybercab autonomous vehicle in Austin, Texas, on Thursday, potentially marking a major step in CEO Elon Musk's strategy to turn Tesla from an EV manufacturer into a broader artificial-intelligence and autonomous-driving company. The two-seat vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals and is expected to become the centerpiece of Tesla's driverless ride-hailing ambitions. Tesla has already begun testing Cybercabs and had 45 registered in Texas as of early September. However, the fleet remains considerably smaller than Waymo's, which had 988 autonomous vehicles registered in the state.
For investors, the key issue isn't simply whether Tesla can demonstrate the Cybercab. It is whether the company can show that autonomous driving is becoming a scalable business. That distinction matters for TSLL traders because Tesla's valuation increasingly depends on expectations around autonomy, rather than its traditional automotive business alone.
"The most important thing to watch is not the demonstration itself, but the operational maturity behind it," Florian Frischmuth, senior vice president of digital engineering at Envorso, told IBD. Investors will therefore be watching for evidence that Cybercabs can operate without safety monitors, how much remote assistance is required and how quickly Tesla can expand the fleet.
Morgan Stanley has also warned that a disappointing Cybercab showing could trigger a sell-off in Tesla, highlighting the binary nature of Thursday's catalyst. In other words, this isn't just a product launch; it's a test of Tesla's entire autonomy thesis.
TSLL Technical Setup Gets More Interesting
TSLL was up 11% at $10.40 at the time of publication on Thursday, according to market data, as Tesla's 5% gain amplified through the ETF's 2X daily leverage. The move puts TSLL 3.4% above a key technical level, suggesting that bullish momentum has strengthened. Holding above that level could encourage additional buying in the near term, particularly if Tesla continues to gain momentum following the Cybercab event.
Volume is adding weight to the move. About 21 million TSLL shares changed hands on Thursday, indicating strong participation as the ETF climbed. For intraday traders, a price breakout accompanied by heavy volume is generally more convincing than a move on thin trading activity. Still, the bigger picture calls for caution. TSLL remains 27.4% below a longer-term resistance level, leaving a significant hurdle for the ETF if the current rally develops into a sustained uptrend.
The ETF's 52-week range of $6.69 to $23.74 also illustrates just how volatile leveraged Tesla exposure can be. At $10.31, TSLL is well above its 52-week low but still far below its high, underscoring both the potential upside and the risk of sharp reversals.
For intraday traders, the immediate question is whether TSLL can hold above the newly reclaimed technical level and build on Thursday's volume surge. A sustained move higher could put the longer-term resistance zone back in focus. A failure to hold the breakout, meanwhile, could invite profit-taking, particularly after a 10% one-day jump.
The Cybercab rollout remains the key catalyst. Concrete details on Tesla's autonomous-driving technology, the pace of fleet expansion and the company's ability to operate robotaxis with minimal human intervention could determine whether Thursday's rally has follow-through. For TSLL traders, that makes Tesla's price action and volume more important than the headline itself. A strong Tesla breakout with continued volume could keep the leveraged ETF in momentum mode, while a post-event reversal could be magnified on the way down.
What Intraday Traders Should Watch
The biggest mistake would be to assume that a 5%+ gain in Tesla automatically means TSLL will finish the day up exactly 10%. TSLL targets 2X Tesla's daily return, not twice Tesla's return over any arbitrary holding period. The fund resets its exposure daily, meaning compounding and volatility can cause its performance to diverge from simply holding Tesla with 2X leverage. Direxion explicitly warns that investing in TSLL is not equivalent to investing directly in TSLA.
