Visa Inc. (V) shares were barely moving in Thursday's premarket session, as investors seemed to favor defensive, large-cap names ahead of the open. Nasdaq futures were down 0.26%, while S&P 500 futures slipped just 0.02%. The stock's quiet start comes as it sits just below its recent highs, a spot that can keep both buyers and profit-takers on edge.

Visa Launches Enhanced A2A Protect
In other news, Visa announced on Tuesday an upgraded version of A2A Protect, its fraud detection tool designed to help financial institutions stop account-to-account payment fraud before the money actually leaves customer accounts. The timing makes sense, given how fast fraudsters move these days.
“Fraudsters move fast across payment types, and financial institutions need risk insights just as quickly, without slowing down legitimate payments,” said James Mirfin, Head of Risk and Security Solutions at Visa.
For context, Visa facilitates payments among consumers, merchants, financial institutions, and governments in more than 200 countries and territories. So when they roll out something like this, it has a pretty wide reach.
Technical Analysis
Now let's talk charts. Visa is trading just below its recent highs, which could keep both buyers and profit-takers active at the open. The stock remains above its key moving averages, keeping the longer-term trend bullish.
Specifically, Visa is above its 20-day SMA at $370.68, its 50-day SMA at $361.37, its 100-day SMA at $341.63, and its 200-day SMA at $333.58. That setup shows buyers have been in control over the past few months, and it gives traders several support levels to watch if a pullback happens.
But momentum is a bit less convincing. The MACD is below its signal line, and the histogram is negative, suggesting the recent rally is losing some steam. In plain English, Visa might need a fresh burst of buying to regain strong upside momentum.
That said, the longer-term trend is still positive. A golden cross formed back in July, when the 50-day SMA moved above the 200-day SMA. And Visa's recent swing high and 52-week high both came in August. A break above that area could give the stock another boost.
- Key Resistance: $385.57, the 52-week high from August
- Key Support: $370.68, the 20-day SMA
Analyst Outlook
Wall Street is still pretty upbeat on Visa. The stock has a Buy rating and an average price target of $422.56. Recent analyst actions include:
- RBC Capital: Outperform; raised its target to $466 on Aug. 31
- Wolfe Research: Outperform; raised its target to $460 on Aug. 25
- Truist Securities: Buy; raised its target to $406 on Aug. 5
Top ETF Exposure
Visa also has a notable presence in several exchange-traded funds, which can amplify buying or selling pressure when those funds see big inflows or outflows. Here are the top ones:
- State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF): 7.29% weight
- Corgi Digital Banking & Fintech Infrastructure ETF (KYC): 9.38% weight
- Akre Focus ETF (AKRE): 6.94% weight
These weights mean that when money flows into or out of these ETFs, Visa's stock can feel the ripple effects.
Price Action
As of Thursday's premarket session, Visa shares were trading up 0.01% at $378.44, according to market data.
