If you're looking for a read on the midterms, you could do worse than checking the crypto prediction markets. And right now, they're telling a pretty clear story: the Democrats are looking good.
Polymarket, the Polygon-based prediction platform, is currently pricing a 51% chance that the Democrats take control of both the House and Senate in the upcoming midterms. That's up from 45% a month ago. A year ago, those odds were just 26%, and at the start of 2026, they stood at 34%.
So what's driving this shift? Let's break it down.
First, the House. Democrats are heavy favorites there, with 89% odds in their favor. The Senate race is closer, with the blue team holding a 51% chance of reclaiming control. The Republicans currently hold both chambers, so a Democratic sweep would be a big deal.
The midterms are scheduled for Nov. 3, so there's still time for things to change. But the trend is clear.
Now, why are the odds moving? A big part of it is President Donald Trump's shrinking approval ratings. Some polls have his overall approval as low as 32% to 34%. That's not great for a president heading into midterms.
And it's not just about Trump personally. Surveys from August show that Americans now trust Democrats more than Republicans to manage the economy. That's a significant shift, ending nearly a decade of Republican advantage on that issue.
What's behind the economic discontent? Rising energy prices, for one. The conflict with Iran has pushed gas prices up, and August set a new record: the national average for gasoline hit $4.056 per gallon, breaking the previous record of $3.940 set in 2022.
Trump has defended the higher prices as a necessary cost of seeking Iran's denuclearization. He said he would "never apologize" because he "did the right thing." Whether voters agree remains to be seen, but the prediction markets are betting they don't.
Of course, prediction markets aren't polls, and they can be influenced by a relatively small number of big bettors. But they do aggregate a lot of information, and they've been pretty good at predicting past elections.
So, what should we make of all this? The midterms are still two months away, and a lot can happen. But if you're a Democrat, the crypto markets are giving you a reason to smile. If you're a Republican, well, there's still time to turn things around. But the clock is ticking.
