AEye Inc. (NASDAQ: LIDR) shares surged on Tuesday after the company announced a multimillion-dollar space mobility contract with Lunar Outpost. The deal is a big win for AEye, which is known for its software-defined lidar systems used in driver assistance, autonomous vehicles, and defense. Now, it's setting its sights on the moon.
Lunar Outpost has selected AEye's Apollo long-range lidar for its Pegasus Lunar Terrain Vehicle, a rover designed to carry NASA Artemis astronauts across the lunar surface. This isn't just another automotive contract; it's a leap into the growing space mobility sector, a market that's about to get a lot more crowded as humanity returns to the moon.
Apollo's Lunar Mission
So, what does Apollo actually do on the moon? Lunar Outpost plans to use it for terrain perception, obstacle detection, and autonomous navigation. The goal is to help Pegasus safely traverse the moon's harsh, crater-filled landscape. Apollo's solid-state design is built to handle extreme temperatures, constant vibration, and the vacuum of space. Its compact size also means it won't weigh down the rover or take up precious space.
One of the coolest features is Apollo's software-defined architecture. That means operators can tweak scan patterns and performance through software updates, allowing Lunar Outpost to customize the sensor for specific mission needs. It's like getting a new sensor without changing the hardware.
AEye CEO Matt Fisch said in a statement: "This multimillion-dollar contract award is a testament to our technology and its ability to address this significant market opportunity."
Beyond Earth
AEye has been making waves on Earth with lidar systems that can detect objects up to a kilometer away. But this deal with Lunar Outpost is a clear signal that the company is thinking bigger. Lunar Outpost, for its part, is no slouch. The company develops robotic systems for extreme environments and has plans for 10 lunar missions before 2030, all in support of establishing a long-term human presence on the moon.
Investors are clearly excited about the possibilities. At the time of publication on Tuesday, AEye shares were up 30.23% at $1.49, according to market data.
This contract is a reminder that lidar technology, once confined to cars and drones, is finding new applications in the final frontier. For AEye, it's a chance to prove that its technology can thrive beyond Earth's atmosphere.
