Intel Corp. (INTC) is having a rough morning. The chipmaker's stock dropped nearly 3% in Tuesday's premarket trading, sliding to $86.88. The decline isn't company-specific; it's part of a broader market selloff. Nasdaq futures were down 1.37%, and S&P 500 futures fell 0.71% as investors turned defensive ahead of the opening bell.
Intel is also pulling back from its June swing high, which adds to the cautious mood. Traders are likely to stay on the sidelines until the stock reclaims its key moving averages, and all eyes are on whether it can hold nearby support.
Technical Analysis: A Mixed Bag
Intel's technical picture is, to put it mildly, complicated. On the plus side, the stock is 18.7% above its 200-day simple moving average of $73.04, which suggests the longer-term uptrend is still intact. But the short-term signals are less encouraging. Intel trades 9.5% below its 20-day SMA of $95.79 and 16.7% below its 50-day SMA of $104.03.
Here's the kicker: the 20-day SMA is below the 50-day SMA, which is a classic sign of weakness in the intermediate trend. Momentum has also cooled. The moving average convergence divergence (MACD) indicator is below its signal line, and the histogram is negative. In plain English, buying pressure is fading.
Intel hit a 52-week high of $142.35 in June, then recorded a swing low and broke below support in July. That means former support levels could now act as resistance, capping any rebound. The current decline still looks like a pullback after a strong rally rather than a full-blown trend reversal, but Intel needs to hold its key support level to keep that narrative alive.
- Key support: $85. This level could be the line in the sand as Intel trades below its short-term moving averages.
Analyst Outlook: Hold On
Wall Street is taking a cautious stance. Intel carries a consensus Hold rating, with an average price target of $110. Recent analyst actions include:
- Bank of America Securities: Maintained a Buy rating and lowered its price target to $145 on Aug. 12.
- UBS: Maintained a Neutral rating and lowered its price target to $112 on Aug. 12.
- Bank of America Securities: Maintained a Buy rating and a $160 price target on July 28.
Momentum Score: Still Bullish, But...
On the MarketDash Edge scorecard, Intel has a bullish Momentum score of 98.51. That's a high number, and it suggests the stock remains a momentum leader despite the recent pullback. But here's the catch: the signal relies heavily on momentum rather than a balanced mix of factors. So, bulls will be watching whether Intel can defend $85 and reclaim its 20-day and 50-day moving averages.
ETF Exposure: A Double-Edged Sword
Intel's weight in several popular ETFs could amplify moves, for better or worse. Here's where the stock stands:
- iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX): 5.53% weighting
- State Street SPDR NYSE Technology ETF (XNTK): 5.86% weighting
- REX FANG & Innovation Equity Premium Income ETF (FEPI): 6.50% weighting
With that kind of exposure, any shift in ETF flows could translate into additional buying or selling pressure on Intel shares.
