Micron Technology, Inc. (Micron (MU)) shares slipped more than 2% in Tuesday's premarket trading, as investors tried to balance two very different stories: the booming demand for AI memory chips and the nagging uncertainty around tariffs and a softer broader market.
Nasdaq futures were down 1.23%, while S&P 500 futures had shed 0.65%, setting a cautious tone for the day.
AI Demand Keeps Memory Supply Tight
The AI story remains remarkably strong. Nvidia Corp. (Nvidia (NVDA)) recently pointed to a robust growth outlook, and former Nvidia executive Jeff Herbst said AI computing demand continues to outpace memory supply.
Herbst noted that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (Samsung (SSNLF)), SK Hynix Inc. (SK Hynix (SKHY)), and Micron are all operating at capacity. He explained that building new fabrication plants takes years, which he expects will keep memory prices elevated for some time.
He also mentioned that Nvidia has secured long-term supply agreements with all three major memory manufacturers, locking in access to the chips it needs for its AI systems.
Trump Praises Micron As Tariff Risks Build
At the same time, President Donald Trump is considering new semiconductor tariffs that could extend to laptops, gaming consoles, and data center servers. Technology companies have warned that such measures could raise costs and slow down AI infrastructure expansion.
But Trump has also been singing Micron's praises. He recently highlighted the company's new $10 billion U.S. research investment, calling Micron one of the "hottest" companies in the world. He pointed to that investment alongside Micron's earlier $250 billion commitment to domestic manufacturing, saying the company is helping keep the U.S. at the forefront of AI and advanced computing.
Micron is also the only U.S.-based manufacturer of high-bandwidth memory, a critical component for AI systems, which the administration sees as vital to domestic AI supply-chain security.
