Here's a twist in the Pentagon's musical chairs: Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth might hand the Army Secretary job to his own spokesman. According to a report from The Hill, Sean Parnell, the Pentagon's chief spokesperson, is on the short list to succeed Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who's expected to leave his post.

Parnell on the Short List

A Pentagon official confirmed Parnell's name is in the mix. "Mr. Parnell has a deep bench of supporters throughout the Administration and has worked tirelessly to enable cultural change and accountability in the Pentagon," the official said. That's a pretty glowing endorsement, though it's worth noting that Parnell, a senior Hegseth adviser, has reportedly been eyeing the role privately for a while.

A senior administration official, however, tried to tamp down the speculation, saying Parnell is "100 percent focused on the job he was appointed to" by President Donald Trump and Hegseth. The Pentagon didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

Driscoll's Exit Still Unfolding

Driscoll's departure timeline isn't set in stone, but reports suggest he plans to step down by the end of the year. That would leave the Army without a Senate-confirmed leader, and neither the Pentagon nor the White House has made a formal announcement about his exit or a successor.

This potential shakeup fits a pattern under Hegseth, who has been consolidating authority among political appointees. Earlier this year, he ousted Navy Secretary John Phelan and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George. So moving his own spokesman into a key role would be consistent with that approach.

Parnell brings some serious credentials to the table. He's a decorated Afghanistan War veteran with two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. He's been running the Pentagon's press operation since February 2025. But his political history is a bit more complicated. He ran for Pennsylvania's 17th Congressional District in 2020 and lost. Then he launched a Senate campaign with Trump's endorsement, but withdrew in November 2021 after losing a custody battle with his estranged wife. The judge in that case said he believed her allegations of abuse, which Parnell has denied.

So, will Parnell get the job? It's still up in the air, but the pieces are moving. For now, the Pentagon's press shop might be bracing for a change at the top, and the Army might be getting a new leader with a very familiar face.
