The Donald Trump administration is gearing up to hit Iran with unprecedented financial sanctions, and Tehran is already firing back with threats of a "crushing, punishing and devastating" response. It's a familiar dance, but the stakes are getting higher as the U.S.-Iran conflict approaches its six-month mark.

Iran Threatens 'Devastating' Retaliation
On Friday, Iranian military officials responded with threats of broad retaliation, according to Reuters. Major General Ali Abdollahi, chief of staff of Iran's Armed Forces, made it clear the country is ready to strike back on multiple fronts.
"With preparedness across land, sea, air, air defense and cyberspace, Iran's armed forces will respond to the enemy's new threats with crushing, punishing and devastating responses," Abdollahi said, as reported by Iranian media.
Iran still has missile and drone capabilities that could threaten regional targets and disrupt shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. That's not just a regional concern; it's a global one, given how much oil flows through that narrow waterway.
China, Oil Markets Face Fallout
The sanctions could have ripple effects far beyond Iran's borders. China buys more than 80% of Iran's shipped oil, according to Kpler data, making Beijing a prime target in Washington's pressure campaign. China's embassy in Washington pushed back, arguing that sanctions won't solve anything and urging diplomacy instead.
Oil prices ticked up on Friday as markets weighed the possibility of tighter supplies and further disruptions around Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a chokepoint for about a fifth of global oil consumption, so any threat to shipping there tends to move prices.
Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf has acknowledged the economic strain, admitting that Iran can't survive without financial activity, economic growth, and domestic production. That's a telling admission from a senior official, suggesting the pressure is biting.
The U.S. and Iran have previously announced ceasefire agreements aimed at restoring shipping through Hormuz, but navigation remains heavily disrupted. So far, those deals haven't fully stuck.
US Plans Toughest Sanctions Yet Against Iran
The threats came after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington will impose the "toughest sanctions in history" on Iran, with more details expected Monday. Trump has also warned that countries providing Iran with "any type of lifeline" could face economic consequences as the administration seeks to isolate Tehran financially.
Bessent didn't mince words about the goal, telling CNBC, "We are going to collapse this regime." That's a clear statement of intent, and it raises the question of how far the U.S. is willing to go—and how Iran might respond if pushed to the brink.
The new measures come as the U.S.-Iran war approaches its six-month mark, adding another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile situation. For investors, the key takeaway is that oil markets are likely to stay on edge as long as this standoff continues.
