Micron Technology Inc. (MU) is having a quiet but positive morning. The memory chipmaker's stock rose nearly 1% in Thursday's premarket trading, even as the broader market showed little movement. Nasdaq futures gained 0.09%, while S&P 500 futures slipped 0.03%.
With no obvious company-specific news driving the move, the early gain looks like traders positioning around key technical levels. Buyers have been defending the stock after its recent pullback, and the technical picture suggests a stock that's catching its breath after a strong run.
Micron Stock Attempts To Extend Its Uptrend
Micron remains in a solid long-term uptrend. The stock is trading 67.6% above its 200-day simple moving average of $563.69 and 18.7% above its 100-day SMA of $795.78. That's a lot of distance from the longer-term averages, which typically signals strong momentum.
But here's the nuance: Micron is still 1.9% below its 50-day SMA of $962.32. That suggests the stock is in a consolidation phase after its big rally. The relative strength index stands at 51.90, which signals neutral momentum. The stock is neither overbought nor oversold, giving it room to move in either direction.
The moving averages themselves tell a story. Micron's 20-day SMA of $894.74 remains below its 50-day SMA, but the 50-day average is well above the 200-day SMA. That's a classic bullish setup for the longer term.
For traders, the key levels to watch are $1,012 as potential resistance, with support near $891.50, close to the 20-day moving average. A break above resistance could signal the start of the next leg up, while a drop below support might suggest more consolidation ahead.
Micron Earnings And Analyst Outlook
The next big catalyst for Micron could be its estimated Sept. 22 earnings report. Analysts expect earnings of $31.27 per share on revenue of $50.81 billion. That's a massive jump from the year-ago quarter, when Micron reported earnings of $3.03 per share on revenue of $11.31 billion. The memory market has been on a tear, and these numbers reflect that.
The stock carries a Buy rating with an average price forecast of $1,537.50. That's a significant upside from current levels, but individual analysts have a range of views.
Citigroup maintained a Buy rating on Aug. 7 but lowered its price forecast to $1,150. KeyBanc raised its price forecast to $1,750 while maintaining an Overweight rating on July 14. Cantor Fitzgerald maintained an Overweight rating and raised its price forecast to $2,000 on June 29. So while the average is bullish, there's a wide spread in targets.
Micron trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 21.2, which is reasonable for a company growing this fast.
Micron Scores High On Momentum
Micron also ranks strongly across several market data metrics. The stock scores 99.62 for momentum, 97.41 for quality and 92.89 for growth. Its value score stands at 31.38.
Those scores point to strong momentum, growth and quality. But the lower value score suggests the stock doesn't screen as a bargain after its sharp rally. You're paying up for the growth, and the market knows it.
ETFs With Micron Exposure
Micron has an 8.91% weighting in the Invesco PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXQ). It also accounts for 8.14% of the State Street SPDR NYSE Technology ETF (XNTK) and 8.71% of the Invesco AI and Next Gen Software ETF (IGPT).
That means large fund flows into or out of these ETFs could influence demand for Micron shares. If investors pile into these funds, Micron gets a boost. If they pull out, it could add selling pressure.
MU Price Action
Micron Technology shares rose 0.84% to $945 in Thursday's premarket trading, according to market data.
