Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) is doubling down on its robotic surgery ambitions. On Monday, the healthcare giant secured U.S. 510(k) regulatory clearance for MONARCH QUEST 3, the newest software iteration for its robotically-assisted bronchoscopy platform.
The update is designed to boost clinical confidence during tricky airway procedures, and it marks the fourth launch for the MONARCH system in the past 18 months. That's a clear signal J&J is serious about continuous innovation in this space.
What MONARCH Does
MONARCH is the first flexible, robotically-assisted platform that helps physicians visualize and access patient airways for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Think of it as a high-tech scope that can navigate the lung's winding passages with more precision than traditional tools.
With QUEST 3, J&J is tackling a common problem: anatomical changes and CT-to-body divergence that happen during procedures. The software gives physicians better control and stable reach, even when the patient's anatomy shifts mid-procedure.
AI and Imaging Upgrades
The new software brings AI-powered nodule segmentation, which lets clinicians automatically generate accurate nodule boundaries with a single click before starting a procedure. That's a time-saver and could improve targeting of suspicious spots in the lungs.
There's also a new 3D Compass overlay that simplifies scope-tip orientation by aligning joystick movements with patient anatomy. It's like having a GPS for your bronchoscope.
And QUEST 3 expands compatibility with mobile and fixed cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging systems. That means hospitals can use their existing imaging infrastructure to better target lung nodules, without needing to buy new equipment.
Bringing It All Together
MONARCH QUEST 3 also integrates Polyphonic, J&J's open digital ecosystem. This extends surgical intelligence beyond the operating room. Clinicians can review procedural volume data and collaborate with colleagues through a centralized video library.
Polyphonic organizes each case into a consistent format, making it easier for medical teams to revisit key moments and support ongoing learning. It's about turning every procedure into a teaching moment.
Market Reaction
Investors seemed to like the news. J&J shares were up 0.58% at $272.68 at the time of publication on Wednesday, according to market data.
