Semiconductor stocks are having a rough morning, and Marvell Technology Inc. (MRVL) is feeling the heat. Shares fell nearly 6% in Tuesday's premarket session as investors hit the brakes on high-valuation chip names. The broader market is also feeling the pressure, with Nasdaq futures down 1.18% and S&P 500 futures off 0.44%.
The pullback comes just ahead of Marvell's Aug. 27 earnings report, and the bar is set pretty high. Analysts are looking for earnings of 87 cents per share, up from 67 cents a year ago. Revenue is expected to jump to $2.71 billion from $2.01 billion. That's impressive growth, but it comes with a hefty price tag: the stock trades at about 80.5 times earnings. When you're paying that kind of premium, there's not much room for error.
Technical Picture: Still Uptrend, But Some Cracks
Looking at the charts, Marvell is still above its longer-term moving averages. The stock sits about 55% above its 200-day simple moving average of $142.18 and 11% above its 100-day SMA of $199.25. That's a sign the long-term trend is still your friend.
But the shorter-term picture is a bit more mixed. Shares are about 7% below the 50-day SMA of $236.46, and the 20-day SMA of $204.48 is below the 50-day average. That suggests some weakening in intermediate momentum. Still, the 50-day SMA remains above the 200-day, which typically signals the uptrend is intact despite the recent volatility.
The MACD is above its signal line with a positive histogram, which suggests selling pressure may be easing. If the pullback deepens, the $178 level could act as a support zone.
Wall Street Still Bullish, But Some Tweaks
Despite the premarket slide, analysts remain largely optimistic. The stock carries a Buy consensus rating with an average price target of $269.09. UBS maintained a Buy rating on Monday but trimmed its price target to $300. KeyBanc raised its target to $400 from a prior level in July while keeping an Overweight rating. RBC Capital also maintained an Outperform rating and a $360 price target back in July.
So the Street sees upside, but the high valuation means the earnings report and guidance will need to deliver to justify the premium.
Growth and Momentum Score Big, Value Not So Much
Marvell scores extremely well on growth and momentum metrics, with scores of 99.78 and 98.56, respectively. But its value score is a paltry 1.29. That's a stark reminder that while the company is growing fast, the stock isn't cheap by traditional valuation measures.
This combination means investors are paying up for future growth, and any disappointment could hit the stock hard.
ETF Exposure: A Double-Edged Sword
Marvell also has significant weightings in several tech-focused ETFs, which can amplify its moves. It makes up 8.20% of the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF (AIQ), 5.69% of the State Street SPDR NYSE Technology ETF (XNTK), and 5.12% of the Invesco PHLX Semiconductor ETF (SOXQ).
That means fund flows into or out of these ETFs can have an outsized impact on Marvell's share price, adding another layer of volatility.
Price Action
Marvell Technology shares fell 5.52% to $221.39 in Tuesday's premarket trading, according to market data.
