Congressional stock trading is always a spectator sport for retail investors, especially when a lawmaker dumps shares of household names. That's exactly what one Pennsylvania congressman just did, and the details are worth a closer look.
Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Penn.) recently reported selling positions in three blue-chip stocks, according to data from the MarketDash Government Trades page. The transactions, all dated July 17, were:
- Sold $1,000 to $15,000 in Abbott Laboratories (ABT) stock
- Sold $1,000 to $15,000 in Walt Disney Co (DIS) stock
- Sold $15,000 to $50,000 in PepsiCo (PEP) stock
But that's not all. The disclosure also included a purchase of $50,000 to $100,000 in a California community clean energy municipal bond, yielding 5% and expiring Oct. 1, 2034. (Note: the original article had a typo saying 20234, but the correct year is 2034.)
The transactions were flagged as being made by Kelly's spouse, which suggests his wife, Victoria Phillips, may have made them without his direct involvement. Phillips comes from a wealthy family with ties to the oil and gas industries.
So why the sell-off? All three stocks are down year-to-date as of this writing, and they're all classic blue chips with hefty market caps and leadership positions in their sectors. They also all pay dividends. Here's the current scorecard:
- ABT: -10.9% year-to-date, 2.3% yield
- DIS: -6.3% year-to-date, 1.4% yield
- PEP: -1.1% year-to-date, 4.2% yield
Interestingly, the Kellys have a long history of favoring municipal bonds over individual stocks. This latest purchase fits that pattern.
