It's a rough morning for memory-chip investors. Micron Technology Inc. Micron (MU) shares dropped nearly 4% in Thursday's premarket session, caught up in a sector-wide slump as semiconductor stocks stumbled. Nasdaq futures were down 0.45%, while S&P 500 futures managed a modest 0.15% gain, but the damage was concentrated in the chip space.
The trigger? Earnings from Western Digital Corp. Western Digital (WDC) and Sandisk Corp. Sandisk (SNDK) that left investors underwhelmed. Western Digital beat quarterly estimates but issued guidance that disappointed, while Sandisk's mixed outlook overshadowed its better-than-expected results and raised questions about the sustainability of its margins.
The reaction rippled across the AI memory and storage complex, dragging down Seagate Technology Holdings plc Seagate (STX), Sandisk, and Micron in premarket trading.
Technical Analysis
Micron was trading at $861.43 in premarket action. The stock sat 5.1% below its 20-day simple moving average of $898.86 and 12.3% below its 50-day SMA of $972.25. But here's the silver lining: it remained 14.4% above its 100-day SMA of $745.63 and a whopping 61.5% above its 200-day SMA of $528.27.
That setup tells a familiar story: the longer-term uptrend is still very much intact, even as the stock works through a medium-term pullback. Think of it as a pause in a marathon, not a sign the race is over.
Momentum has also cooled off. The relative strength index, or RSI, stood at 49.16, which signals neutral momentum. In plain English, the stock is neither overbought nor oversold, suggesting we're in a consolidation phase rather than an extreme move in either direction.
The moving-average structure, however, points to near-term pressure. The 20-day SMA remains below the 50-day SMA, a bearish crossover that can put a lid on short-term rallies. But the 50-day SMA is still above the 200-day SMA, which indicates the broader trend remains constructive. So, while the immediate picture looks shaky, the foundation underneath is solid.
Key resistance sits near $1,012, close to the 50-day trend area where rallies could face selling pressure. On the downside, initial support is around $804, a recent demand zone that buyers have defended before.
Earnings And Analyst Outlook
Micron's next earnings report is expected on Sept. 22, 2026. Wall Street is looking for earnings of $31.24 per share, a massive jump from $3.03 a year earlier, on revenue of $50.72 billion, compared with $11.31 billion in the prior-year quarter. Those numbers reflect the explosive growth in AI-driven memory demand.
The stock trades at about 20.2 times earnings, and analysts remain bullish. The consensus rating is Buy, with an average price target of $1,548.86. Recent analyst actions include:
- KeyBanc maintained an Overweight rating and raised its price target to $1,750 on July 14.
- Cantor Fitzgerald maintained an Overweight rating and raised its price target to $2,000 on June 29.
- Cantor Fitzgerald also maintained an Overweight rating with a $1,500 price target on June 25.
That's a lot of conviction, even with the stock pulling back.
MarketDash Edge Rankings
MarketDash Edge rates Micron highly on momentum, growth, and quality. The stock carries a Momentum score of 99.65, a Quality score of 97.70, and a Growth score of 88.79. Its Value score of 36.76 suggests the shares trade closer to fair value than at a deep discount.
Overall, these ratings indicate that investors continue to favor Micron's long-term growth profile despite the recent pullback. The high momentum and quality scores are particularly notable, suggesting the market still sees this as a top-tier player in the semiconductor space.
