If you're looking for a wild ride in the ETF world, Wednesday was your day. The Direxion Daily SHOP Bull 2X ETF (SHPU) shot up nearly 40%, making it one of the best-performing U.S.-listed ETFs of the session. The catalyst? Shopify Inc. (SHOP) delivered quarterly results that blew past expectations, sending its stock soaring and giving leveraged bulls a massive payday.
For the uninitiated, SHPU is a single-stock leveraged ETF. It's designed to deliver 200% of Shopify's daily price performance, before fees and expenses. That means when Shopify moves, SHPU moves twice as much. But here's the catch: it's built for short-term tactical trading. Because of daily compounding, the returns can drift from exactly twice the stock's performance if you hold it longer than a day. It's a tool for traders, not buy-and-hold investors.
The rally was fueled by Shopify's shares jumping about 20% after the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter fiscal 2026 results and gave upbeat third-quarter revenue guidance. That helped ease investor worries about AI spending and intensifying competition.
Let's dig into the numbers. Shopify posted adjusted earnings of 42 cents per share, beating the 40 cents analysts expected. Revenue climbed 34.3% year over year to $3.58 billion, ahead of the $3.45 billion consensus. Adjusted net income hit $439 million, and gross merchandise volume (GMV) rose 32% to $115.6 billion. Solid across the board.
But the real headline-grabber was AI. The company highlighted accelerating adoption of AI-powered commerce. AI-driven traffic and merchant orders both tripled from a year earlier. Even more impressive, new buyer orders generated through AI channels arrived at nearly twice the rate of other sales channels. While AI-driven commerce still represents a small slice of GMV, management said the technology is improving customer acquisition and conversion rates. That's the kind of metric that gets investors excited.
Shopify's earnings-fueled rally translated into outsized gains for SHPU, underscoring how leveraged single-stock ETFs can amplify market reactions to major corporate events. The upside is thrilling, but the flip side is just as dramatic. Because of the daily reset feature, these funds can suffer equally pronounced losses when the underlying stock reverses. It's a double-edged sword.
