Rocket Lab Corp. (NASDAQ: RKLB) shares got a nice boost in Wednesday's premarket session after the company announced a big win: a $397 million contract from the U.S. Space Force. The deal is for the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) program, which aims to keep an eye on moving targets from space.

What Rocket Lab Will Do
Under the agreement, Rocket Lab will develop, launch, and operate multiple Flatellites, its next-generation satellite platform designed for large constellations. These spacecraft will carry space-based sensors and low-latency, high-bandwidth communications gear to detect and track airborne threats in real time.
The satellites will ride into orbit on Rocket Lab's upcoming Neutron rocket, and the company will operate them from secure ground facilities. It will also provide tracking data directly to the U.S. Space Force. The contract includes an option for additional Flatellites, so there's room to grow.
The SB-AMTI program is all about strengthening the military's ability to monitor contested airspace. Instead of relying on aircraft that could be vulnerable, it uses a resilient satellite network to continuously track airborne targets from space.
Why Vertical Integration Matters
Rocket Lab says this award highlights its vertically integrated business model, which combines satellite design, manufacturing, launch services, and mission operations under one roof. That's a big selling point for defense customers who want a single partner to handle everything.
CEO Sir Peter Beck said the company is well positioned to support the Space Force with end-to-end satellite and launch capabilities while expanding the nation's space-based sensing architecture. It's a nice vote of confidence for a company that's been building out its space systems division.
This contract adds to Rocket Lab's growing list of U.S. government customers, which already includes the U.S. Space Force, the National Reconnaissance Office, DARPA, and NASA. The government is clearly a key growth area for the company.
Why This Program Matters
The SB-AMTI program is designed to reduce the military's reliance on aircraft-based surveillance in contested environments, where traditional platforms face growing threats. Instead, it will deploy a constellation of satellites equipped with advanced sensors and secure communications.
Artificial intelligence-powered ground processing will analyze the data to provide persistent, real-time tracking of airborne targets and improve battlefield awareness. It's a shift toward space-based defense that could have big implications for how the military operates.
RKLB Price Action: Rocket Lab shares were up 3.14% at $76.81 during premarket trading on Wednesday, according to market data.
