IDEXX Laboratories (IDXX) shares were having a good day Tuesday, and it's not hard to see why. The veterinary diagnostics company reported second-quarter results that beat Wall Street's expectations and nudged up its full-year profit outlook. Sometimes that's all it takes to make investors smile.

Companion Animal Diagnostics Fuel Growth
The headline numbers: earnings of $4.27 per share, comfortably ahead of the $3.96 analysts were looking for. Revenue came in at $1.217 billion, up 10% year over year (9% on an organic basis), and also topped the Street's $1.201 billion estimate.
Digging into the segments, the Companion Animal Group, the company's bread and butter, saw revenue rise 9% to $1.118 billion. That was powered by an 11% jump in recurring diagnostics revenue, or 10% organically. The Water segment also had a nice quarter, with revenue up 15% to $59 million, helped by strong demand in the U.S. and Europe. Livestock, Poultry and Dairy revenue grew 11% to $35 million, led by strength across the Americas.
CEO Mike Erickson credited the company's "Technology for Life" strategy, pointing to continued innovation across its Catalyst, Fecal Dx, and IDEXX inVue Dx platforms. "Our second quarter results reflect the strength of our Technology for Life strategy, with continued innovation across our Catalyst, Fecal Dx, and IDEXX inVue Dx platforms supporting deeper customer adoption and higher diagnostic utilization," he said.
Company Raises 2026 Profit Outlook
Looking ahead, IDEXX raised its fiscal 2026 earnings guidance to a range of $14.69 to $14.94 per share, up from its prior forecast of $14.45 to $14.90. That new range sits above the consensus estimate of $14.67. The company also narrowed its revenue guidance to $4.70 billion to $4.745 billion, from $4.675 billion to $4.76 billion previously. Analysts had been expecting $4.711 billion.
Management said the revised outlook reflects continued strength in recurring Companion Animal Diagnostics revenue, improved commercial execution, and expectations for higher operating margin expansion and earnings growth.
Analysts Remain Constructive Despite Soft Vet Visits
It wasn't all smooth sailing. U.S. same-store clinical visits declined 1.3% during the quarter, and management noted that pressure on wellness visits remains the primary headwind, though non-wellness visits showed modest growth. Still, the company placed more than 5,200 premium diagnostic instruments during the quarter, including about 1,600 InVue Dx analyzers, keeping it on track to hit its full-year target of 5,500 units.
William Blair analyst Ryan Daniels said the results were in line with expectations despite the ongoing weakness in veterinary visits and soft consumer sentiment. He added that while an industrywide recovery in patient volumes hasn't materialized yet, the company's 2026 organic growth outlook looks achievable. Daniels pointed to several potential growth catalysts in the second half of the year, including expanded Cancer Dx offerings, additional capabilities for the inVue Dx platform, and growing demand for non-wellness care from an aging U.S. pet population.
He also highlighted IDEXX's strong competitive position, citing industry-leading customer satisfaction and the potential for another product launch.
IDXX Price Action: IDEXX Laboratories shares were up 3.34% at $586.79 at the time of publication on Tuesday.
