Alphabet Inc. (GOOG) (GOOGL) shares popped about 3% on Monday after reports surfaced that the Google parent is cooking up a new custom AI server chip. The chip, code-named "Frozen v2," is designed to run the company's Gemini models more efficiently — and that could mean big things for both the bottom line and the stock.
The timing is also nice: investors are counting down to Alphabet's second-quarter earnings report on July 22.
According to The Information, Google is developing an internally designed server chip that embeds parts of Gemini's architecture directly into the hardware. The idea is to cut down on the amount of computation and data movement needed to generate AI responses. Think of it as building a custom engine for a specific race car rather than using a generic one.
Engineers believe Frozen v2 could deliver six to ten times more AI tokens per unit of power than Google's latest custom AI chips. That's a massive efficiency gain. The company is targeting deployment by 2028, though the design is still under development, CNBC reported Monday.
The chip is meant to complement Google's existing tensor processing units (TPUs), not replace them. The goal is to improve AI inference efficiency — the part where the model actually generates answers — and ease the growing pressure on Google's computing infrastructure.
AI capacity constraints have become a real headache inside Google. According to reports, these bottlenecks have forced Google Cloud to limit some external customer demand. As Gemini usage keeps expanding, having more efficient custom chips becomes increasingly critical. Frozen v2 could help Google run its AI workloads without needing to build as many new data centers — or at least stretch the ones it has further.
Zooming out, GOOG is still in a solid uptrend. The stock is up 86.6% over the past year and trades 10.9% above its 200-day moving average of $321.52. That keeps the big-picture bias constructive.
But the near-term picture is a bit more mixed. The stock sits just 0.9% above its 20-day SMA ($353.44) but 2.9% below its 50-day SMA ($367.20). And the 20-day SMA is below the 50-day SMA — a bearish short-term alignment. So while the long-term trend is your friend, the short-term action could go either way, especially with earnings on deck.
