The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) on Sunday made it clear that Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz, and to prove the point, it announced a fresh round of strikes against Tehran. The region is heating up, and the message from Washington is blunt: the waterway stays open.

New Strikes, Same Message
In a post on X, CENTCOM said it conducted a "new wave of offensive strikes against Iran," hitting dozens of targets to deter Tehran from going after ships in the Strait. The targets included Iran's "air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats," hit by fighter aircraft and naval vessels.
CENTCOM then reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz — which before the war handled about a fifth of the world's oil — is a "vital maritime corridor" for international trade. "Iran does not control it," the update said, adding that U.S. forces are ensuring safe passage despite Iran's "unwarranted aggression" and "threats."
The command has been walking the walk, too. Since May, it has helped more than 800 commercial vessels move through the Strait, carrying 380 million barrels of oil. That's a lot of crude, and a clear signal that the U.S. intends to keep the sea lanes open.
On the other side, Iran's Speaker of Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has insisted the waterway is under Iran's command. Tehran has also claimed it shut down the Strait after a vessel used an unapproved route — though the U.S. says traffic is still flowing.
Escalation on Both Sides
This isn't the first wave of strikes. CENTCOM earlier hit Iran under orders from President Donald Trump to "hold Iranian forces accountable" over the Strait uncertainty. Iran has reportedly retaliated with strikes on U.S. assets in Jordan, Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain. The tit-for-tat is getting serious, and the Strait of Hormuz remains the flashpoint.
For now, the U.S. is doubling down: the waterway is open, Iran doesn't control it, and the strikes will keep coming if needed.
