Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is celebrating Union Pacific's newest locomotive, and it's not just any train—it's a rolling tribute to President Donald Trump and America's 250th birthday. And here's the kicker: its first job is hauling rocket parts for NASA's Artemis III mission.
In a post on X Monday, Duffy showed off Union Pacific's Locomotive No. 4547, which features a patriotic design honoring Trump and the nation's semiquincentennial. "The Trump Train is Rolling," Duffy wrote, adding that the locomotive's maiden voyage involves "hauling solid rocket motor segments" for NASA's lunar exploration program.
Union Pacific (Union Pacific (UNP)) unveiled the locomotive on June 3rd, noting it's the third in a series of presidential engines. The first honored Abraham Lincoln (No. 1616), and the second was built for George H.W. Bush (No. 4141). CEO Jim Vena said in a statement, "As No. 4547 carries these rocket components, it represents the strength of our nation's supply chain and our role in connecting the country."
The Artemis III mission aims to return humans to the Moon, and the solid rocket motor segments are critical for the Space Launch System rocket that will get them there. NASA has outlined plans to establish a base on the lunar surface, with backing from SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk (Tesla (TSLA)). Other companies are also jumping in: General Motors (General Motors (GM)) announced its defense unit will supply battery-electric propulsion for a new lunar terrain vehicle, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin landed a deal to deliver two rovers to the Moon using its uncrewed cargo lander.
Meanwhile, Union Pacific is making big moves on the ground. The railroad recently signed a $1.2 billion agreement with Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies Corp. (Wabtec (WAB)) to modernize its AC4400 locomotive fleet. The deal covers over 1,700 locomotives, with deliveries slated to begin in 2027.
Rail safety is also in the spotlight. President Trump has backed a reform bill aimed at improving railroad safety following the 2023 East Palestine derailment. Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also voiced support, saying conservatives were "in the way" of reforms to curb derailments. The bipartisan attention suggests changes could be coming to the industry.
So whether it's hauling rocket parts or modernizing fleets, Union Pacific is at the center of some pretty big stories—both on Earth and beyond.
