Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) took aim at President Donald Trump on Monday, accusing him of turning the White House's front lawn into a personal playground for billionaires instead of focusing on what matters to ordinary Americans.
In a sharp post on X, Warren listed off some of the more eye-catching additions to the White House grounds under Trump: a "UFC cage," "a Tesla showroom," and a "gold-encrusted ballroom." Her point was clear — while the president is busy with these flashy projects, families are struggling with high prices.
Trump has been cozy with Elon Musk and his company Tesla Inc. Tesla (TSLA) since early in his second term. He held a White House event openly endorsing the electric carmaker, and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick even urged people to buy Tesla stock. That's not surprising given that Musk spent roughly $250 million in donations to help get Trump back into the White House during the 2024 election.
Warren didn't hold back: "Trump has been busy turning the White House front lawn into his billionaire playground," she wrote. Then she asked the question that's been on a lot of minds: "What has he done for American families?"
The UFC fight card is being promoted as part of Trump's 80th birthday celebration and the 250th Fourth of July festivities. But not everyone is thrilled — a federal lawsuit against the event has been filed by The Public Integrity Project on behalf of two Virginia residents. As for the ballroom, the administration said it was needed after a security incident at the White House Correspondents Association dinner back in April.
All this comes at a time when the U.S. economy is facing serious headwinds. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, has warned that the economy is growing below its potential, leaving it vulnerable to a slowdown and rising unemployment. Gas prices have been hovering above $4 a gallon — the national average on Monday was $4.1640, according to AAA. In states like California and Nevada, drivers are paying more than $5 a gallon. The Iran war has been a key factor pushing prices up.
So while the White House lawn gets a UFC cage and a Tesla showroom, many Americans are just trying to afford a tank of gas. Warren's critique hits at a broader frustration: that the president's priorities seem to be elsewhere.
