Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) isn't buying what the Trump administration is selling on gas taxes. On Monday, she blasted the idea of a temporary federal gas tax suspension, arguing that removing 18.4 cents per gallon is a drop in the bucket when the national average is already $4.52. Her message: make it permanent, or don't bother.

Greene Says Gas Tax Cut Falls Short
Greene took to X to vent. "Trump admin is considering temporarily removing the 18.4 cents federal gas tax, which requires a vote from Congress, sure get rid of it entirely," she wrote. Then she added the kicker: "But the national price of gas would not be $4.52 today if Trump had never gone to war with Iran on behalf of Israel, and taking off 18.4 cents isn't really going to help Americans that much!"
She didn't stop there. "And America produces enough oil to be self sufficient, we shouldn't be getting gouged at the pump anyway. The America LAST failures for decades from leaders in Washington D.C. have over-regulated, blocked land leases, and prevented more refineries from being built, which all led to consistently unnecessary high gas prices. Instead of helping Americans, they pursued and continue to pursue WARS in the Middle East. Yes, please do throw the peasants some more bread crumbs. But at least make it permanent!"
Trump Floats Temporary Relief As Prices Surge
Greene's comments came after President Donald Trump said Monday he supported suspending the federal gasoline tax as prices surged during the Iran war. "I think it's a great idea," Trump told CBS News. "Yup, we're going to take off the gas tax for a period of time, and when gas goes down, we'll let it phase back in."
But there's a catch: the President can't do it alone. According to an Associated Press report, Congress would have to approve the move. The federal tax is 18.4 cents per gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon on diesel, and it helps fund highways and public transit. The national average gas price hit $4.52 a gallon Monday, per AAA data — about 50% higher than before the Iran conflict.
Greene Deepens Break With Trump's Foreign Policy
Greene, who fell out with Trump last fall before resigning her Georgia seat in January, has become a sharp critic of his foreign policy. She's accused Trump of abandoning "No More Foreign Wars" pledges and said his Iran posture is "everything we voted against."
This isn't her first fiscal protest. Ahead of tax day on April 15 last month, Greene backed a "2026 tax revolt," arguing that Americans should withhold federal income taxes until Washington stops funding foreign aid and wars. Taxpayers, she said, are "fed up" with a government they believe doesn't serve them.
