So here's a classic Washington story: while federal workers are going without pay during a partial government shutdown, Senator Lindsey Graham decided to take a trip to Disney World. Because nothing says "I feel your pain" like waiting in line for Space Mountain with a bubble wand while people wonder how they'll pay their mortgages.
Graham, the Republican from South Carolina, was spotted at the Orlando theme park on Friday and Saturday, according to reports. Photos showed him enjoying the attractions while back in Washington, the shutdown drama continued to unfold.
When asked about it, Graham had a ready explanation: "I was invited to a meeting in South Florida on Friday with Trump official Steve Witkoff … to talk about the possibility of normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel," he told TMZ. "I went to Orlando to meet friends after. I'm already back in South Carolina."
But here's the kicker: when pressed about the optics of a Disney trip during a shutdown that's leaving federal workers unpaid, Graham essentially said, don't look at me. "I voted 7 times to fully fund the government," he told TMZ. "Call a Democrat."
He did acknowledge that, in reality, "responsibility falls on both Democrats and Republicans, as neither side has been able to get the job done." But still, the message was clear: if you're upset about unpaid workers, talk to the other guys.
Just to drive home that he wasn't on some extended Florida vacation, Graham posted a photo of himself hunting in Edgefield County, South Carolina, on Monday. Message received: he's back home and working (or at least hunting).
The TSA Pay Controversy
Meanwhile, the shutdown drama has taken a particularly sharp turn for Transportation Security Administration workers. Last week, President Donald Trump declared an emergency and ordered immediate pay for over 60,000 TSA employees, including 50,000 frontline officers who had been working without pay.
This shutdown, now in its sixth week, started because Democrats refused to fund the Department of Homeland Security without changes to federal immigration enforcement. So you've got this standoff where essential workers are caught in the middle.
Senator Elizabeth Warren, the Democrat from Massachusetts, didn't mince words about the situation. She accused Republicans of blocking TSA funding to push something called the SAVE Act, calling it "holding TSA workers' pay hostage" and warning travelers to "thank Donald Trump" for any delays they experience.
Warren noted that Democrats had repeatedly voted to fund the agency while many Republicans opposed it. So you've got both sides pointing fingers at each other while workers wonder when their next paycheck is coming.
The political theater extended to California Governor Gavin Newsom, who criticized Trump's deployment of ICE agents to TSA checkpoints, calling them a "lawless, under-trained, personal police force."
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy had a different take, saying ICE agents were "trained and ready" to assist and blaming Democratic lawmakers for long airport lines.
So here's where we are: federal workers aren't getting paid, politicians are taking trips to Disney World and telling critics to call the other party, and everyone's pointing fingers while essential services hang in the balance. It's government shutdown politics as usual, just with better theme park photos this time.
