Here's the thing about Tesla Inc. (TSLA)—everyone knows who they are. That's not the problem. The problem is what people think about them once they know.
A new EV Intelligence Report shows something pretty remarkable: Tesla has slipped to the bottom of the brand rankings. We're talking last place. Meanwhile, Toyota Motor Corp (TM) and Honda Motor Co (HMC) continue to lead on brand positivity and trust.
The report puts it bluntly: "Tesla remains at the bottom of the pack." The numbers back that up. Despite near-universal recognition, Tesla posts a brand positivity score of -4. Toyota and Honda? +20 and +16, respectively. Brand trust? Tesla at -8, versus +26 for Toyota and +20 for Honda.
So people know Tesla—they just don't necessarily trust it. That's a pretty important distinction when you're selling cars.
The Musk Factor
Now here's where it gets interesting. The report highlights that when consumers think about Tesla's Full Self-Driving technology—one of the company's biggest long-term bets—they're not just thinking about autonomy. They're thinking about Elon Musk.
"Elon Musk ranks among the top associations, and negative Musk sentiment accounts for 14% of responses—more than double the share citing unfamiliarity with the Tesla technology," the report notes.
Think about that for a second. This isn't just general brand sentiment. This is specifically tied to FSD, which is supposed to be Tesla's technological crown jewel. And the implication is pretty clear: concerns around the technology are being shaped not just by performance or safety, but by who's leading it.
Putting Numbers to the Problem
When you dig into the FSD data, "Negative Elon Musk Association" emerges as a distinct response category at 14%. That puts it right alongside "Safety Concerns & Danger" at 33% and "General Dislike & Opposition" at 17%.
So Musk isn't just background noise here. He's a measurable variable in the perception equation. When people think "Full Self-Driving," a meaningful chunk of them are also thinking "I don't like that Elon Musk guy."
