So, Zillow's stock is having a good day. Zillow Group (Z) shares climbed over 6% Tuesday morning, and it's not just because the broader market was up (though the Nasdaq did rise 0.74%). The real story is a new product that's basically pulling back the curtain on the secret world of home listings.
The catalyst is something called Zillow Preview. Think of it as a spotlight for homes that are about to hit the market. Starting next month, this new tool will make "coming soon" listings publicly visible on Zillow and its sister site, Trulia. Before this, a lot of these pre-market listings were tucked away in private networks that only real estate agents could see. Now, they'll be out in the open for everyone.
"Zillow Preview shines a light on listings that might otherwise stay hidden," said Zillow CEO Jeremy Wacksman. He framed it as giving buyers open access to inventory, which is a pretty big deal when there's a national housing shortage.
What's interesting is who's backing this move. It's not just Zillow going rogue. They've got some heavy hitters from the real estate world on board as partners, including Keller Williams, RE/MAX (RMAX), HomeServices of America, Side, and United Real Estate. Getting these firms to align on transparency is a strategic win.
For agents and sellers, there's an incentive structure. Preview listings get elevated placement in search results, and agents can get a revenue share if a connection from the platform leads to a closed deal. Erik Carlson, CEO of RE/MAX, put it this way: "This is exactly what consumers want and deserve as they navigate one of life's biggest transactions."
This move fits neatly into Zillow's broader play. The company is already the most visited real estate marketplace in the U.S., averaging 235 million unique monthly users. By simplifying the home-buying journey and increasing transparency, they're strengthening their position as the central hub for everything real estate.
At the time of publication, Zillow Group (Z) shares were up 5.98% at $44.90. Sometimes a little sunlight is all you need for a rally.
