U.S. Embassy in Kuwait Hit
Fire and thick black smoke were seen near the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait on Monday during a new wave of Iranian missile and drone attacks across the Gulf. This prompted sirens and security alerts, according to the U.S. Department of State Consular Affairs. The Department also urged people not to visit the Embassy and to stay indoors. So, not a great day for diplomacy in the region.
Sirens in Jordan, Explosions in Iraq
MarketDash reported that sirens have been sounding continuously for several hours in Jordan's coastal city of Aqaba. The news outlet also reported strong explosions in the capital of Iraq's Kurdish region, with Iraqi air defenses intercepting missiles and drones targeting Erbil International Airport. When the air defenses start working overtime, you know the situation is getting serious.
F-15 Suspected in Kuwait Crash
Verified videos show thick smoke billowing in Kuwait's Al-Jahra city, about 32km west of Kuwait City, after a fighter jet crashed. Unconfirmed reports indicate the aircraft may have been Boeing Inc.'s (BA) F-15. Separate reports suggested that the pilot safely ejected before the crash and was later seen near the Kuwait-Iraq border crash site, indicating the emergency evacuation system worked properly. Sometimes the technology does what it's supposed to do, even in a crisis.
Jet-Drone Collision Over Syria
In a separate incident, verified footage shows a jet colliding with a drone over Deraa in southwestern Syria, though the countries operating the aircraft remain unclear. When you have unidentified aircraft colliding in contested airspace, it rarely leads to simpler geopolitics.
EU Backs Cyprus After Base Attack
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen took to social media on Monday to share that she spoke with Cyprus's president, Nikos Christodoulides, following the attack on the UK base at Akrotiri. She stressed that while Cyprus was not the target, the EU stands firmly and collectively with its member states against any threat. It's the kind of solidarity statement that gets issued when things are getting messy enough to require official reassurance.
