So, here's a story about airports, names, and politics—which, in Washington, often end up being the same thing. Former President Donald Trump is reportedly planning to hold a meeting about revamping Washington Dulles Airport. This comes after he criticized the airport's design last year. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is also expected to be there, according to officials from the White House cited in a Reuters report.

The airport itself is apparently getting a significant upgrade. Later this year, it's expected to unveil a new 435,000-square-foot (that's about 40,412 square meters), 14-gate concourse that will serve United Airlines (UAL). For context, the airport authority says Dulles served 29 million passengers in 2025. Authorities had already been taking proposals to redesign the place, partly because of complaints about the smell of jet fuel in the terminals. The Transport Department had previously said Dulles was "no longer an airport suitable and grand enough" for the capital. So, maybe this meeting is about making it grand again.

But here's where it gets more interesting—and more political. At the same time, a bill has been introduced by Rep. Addison McDowell (R-NC) that seeks to rename Dulles Airport to the "Donald J. Trump International Airport." The bill, introduced on Monday, already has eight other GOP leaders as cosponsors and has been referred to the Subcommittee on Aviation by the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

This isn't the first time lawmakers have tried to put Trump's name on an airport. Florida lawmakers had previously pushed a proposal to rename Palm Beach International Airport after him. And, in a related bit of naming, lawmakers were also renaming a four-mile stretch of Southern Boulevard as the "President Donald J. Trump Boulevard," which links that airport to Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate.

All this airport talk is happening against a backdrop of other transportation-related news. The Department of Homeland Security had suspended the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) PreCheck facility—you know, the program that lets pre-approved passengers zip through security faster—but then rolled back that suspension after backlash. Meanwhile, the DHS is currently experiencing a shutdown, as lawmakers continue to demand changes following multiple fatal shootings involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

So, to recap: there's a meeting about making Dulles Airport better, a bill about giving it a new name, and a whole lot of other government drama happening at the same time. It's a classic Washington mix of infrastructure, politics, and bureaucracy.
