Trump Highlights Ancient Traditions
President Donald Trump posted a message on the White House website extending his "best wishes to the millions of people of Asian heritage" across the U.S. and around the globe. He called the Lunar New Year "an ancient holiday marked by thanksgiving and joy," noting that the horse represents "momentum, vitality, passion, freedom and adventure."
"The First Lady and I join in wishing you a year filled with health, happiness, good fortune and peace," Trump wrote.
Silicon Valley Joins The Celebration
Lisa Su, CEO of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. (AMD), posted on X: "Happy #LunarNewYear! Wishing our friends, colleagues and the AMD family around the world a happy, healthy and prosperous Year of the Horse."
Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc. (AAPL), kept it simple: "Happy Year of the Horse to everyone celebrating!"
California Governor Gavin Newsom used the occasion to recognize the state's Asian American population, saying, "California would not be California without our Asian American community."
Ivanka Trump reflected on the zodiac symbolism, describing the Year of the Fire Horse as "a year for bold ideas, decisive action and turning vision into something enduring." Maye Musk, Elon Musk's mother and a model and dietitian, also chimed in on X with her own message: "Happy Chinese New Year to China."
The World's Biggest Migration
All this celebration comes with real-world logistics that boggle the mind. The holiday has kicked off what's routinely called the world's largest annual human migration. According to the BBC, China alone is expecting around 9.5 billion cross-regional trips during the travel rush as families reunite for festivities built around food, fireworks and centuries-old traditions.
This year marks the Year of the Horse in the Chinese zodiac, paired with the fire element. The horse traditionally symbolizes vitality and confidence, while fire brings associations of passion and bold action—themes that resonated in many of the public messages shared this week.
