Trump's Harsh Assessment
Trump didn't hold back on Sunday, calling the halftime show "absolutely terrible" and "an affront to the Greatness of America." His critique extended beyond the Spanish lyrics to include the performance itself and the choreography. He also took aim at media outlets for what he described as undeserved praise of the show.
In typical fashion, Trump mixed his cultural commentary with economic talking points, highlighting record stock markets and 401(k) performance. He also used the opportunity to urge the National Football League to reconsider its new kickoff rule.
Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) echoed Trump's criticism, specifically calling out the lack of English subtitles. She labeled the all-Spanish performance "exclusive" rather than inclusive, arguing it ignored the majority English-speaking audience. Salazar said the event should have celebrated Hispanic contributions to America while unifying the country, calling it a "very big opportunity lost."
Political activist Laura Loomer criticized the NFL on X for displaying foreign flags during the Super Bowl, calling it "disgraceful" and claiming it "has nothing American" about it.
The Conservative Defense
Not everyone on the right agreed. Conservative commentator Emily Austin said she lost followers for admitting she enjoyed Bad Bunny's performance, but emphasized staying honest over seeking approval. She noted that differing opinions can coexist with patriotism and support for the President.
Caroline Sunshine, who served in the Trump administration, praised the show for featuring a real wedding ceremony. According to The Hill, she called it the only halftime show this year to highlight marriage.
Former Trump staffer Harrison Fields reminded critics that Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, pointing out that his Puerto Rico-born grandmother "was a full American citizen—and she voted for Trump."
