Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) founder Jeff Bezos kicked off Monday by posting a turtle image and tagging Blue Origin, which naturally drew a swift response from SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Because when two billionaires are competing in space, everything becomes a metaphor.

The Tortoise Strikes Back
Musk replied with "Turtle heading?" before adding, "When it's coming out slowly, but ferociously." The exchange is a pretty clear nod to the tortoise and the hare fable, where slow and steady wins the race. Subtle it was not.
Why the Moon Suddenly Makes Sense
The social media sparring came right after Musk announced that SpaceX has pivoted its primary focus from Mars to establishing a self-sustaining city on the Moon. "For those unaware, SpaceX has already shifted focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon, as we can potentially achieve that in less than 10 years, whereas Mars would take 20+ years," Musk wrote on X.
The logic is actually pretty straightforward. Mars missions can only launch every 26 months due to orbital mechanics, and each trip takes six months. Lunar missions, meanwhile, can launch every 10 days with just a two-day journey. "This means we can iterate much faster to complete a Moon city than a Mars city," Musk explained.
SpaceX still plans to pursue Mars colonization in five to seven years, but the Moon is now the "overriding priority" for "securing the future of civilization."
A Complete Reversal
This marks a significant shift from Musk's January 2025 position, when he dismissed the Moon as "a distraction" and declared SpaceX was "going straight to Mars."
Bezos Versus Musk Heats Up
The rivalry between Bezos and Musk keeps expanding. They're now competing across space exploration, satellite internet with Blue Origin's TeraWave taking on Starlink, and artificial intelligence following Bezos' launch of Project Prometheus in November. Apparently one industry wasn't enough.
