So much for stepping back. Billionaire Elon Musk is back in the political spending game, and he's bringing a hefty checkbook with him as the 2026 midterm elections heat up.

The Return of Mega-Donor Musk
After announcing in 2025 that he planned to pull back from political spending, Musk has done what people with $20 million to spare sometimes do: changed his mind. Federal Election Commission filings reveal that the Tesla Inc. (TSLA) and SpaceX CEO has funneled at least $20 million to super PACs aligned with House and Senate GOP leadership, according to a Sunday report from The Hill.
That's not all. Musk also kicked in $5 million to President Donald Trump's super PAC, MAGA Inc., signaling that whatever tensions existed between the two may be smoothing over.
This month alone, Musk donated $10 million to a super PAC supporting Nate Morris, the Kentucky Senate candidate vying to replace retiring Sen. Mitch McConnell. To put that in perspective, the contribution dwarfed the campaign's existing cash on hand and gave Republican fundraising efforts a serious shot in the arm.
"Musk as a donor is important [because] money in politics is important, but Musk himself is a politically polarizing figure," said Cayce Myers, a Virginia Tech professor who studies political campaigns. He added, "As his money is needed, the fact that he is involved does create a complicated political situation for Republicans."
In other words, Republicans need the money, but Musk comes with baggage.
Patching Things Up With Trump
Musk was the heavyweight champion of political donors during the 2024 election cycle, dropping roughly $250 million to support Trump and other Republicans. But then he stepped away from Washington after controversy erupted over his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency and a very public falling-out with Trump.
His recent donations suggest the cold war has thawed. "It certainly feels like the president and Elon Musk are back in a good place," said Republican strategist Brian Seitchik.
Democracy, Voting Rules, and Dinner Photos
Last week, Musk waded into the U.S. voting debate, warning that democracy itself was at stake if Congress didn't enforce stricter proof-of-citizenship rules. Responding to Glenn Beck's call for the SAVE Act, Musk declared, "It must be done or democracy is dead."
Last month, Trump returned the warmth during a White House press briefing. "Elon's [Musk] great," Trump said. "He's 80% super genius and 20% he makes mistakes." He also described Musk as a "well-meaning" person.
Musk shared a photo from a dinner with Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, calling it a "lovely dinner" and adding that "2026 is going to be amazing."
Whether amazing or not, one thing's clear: Musk is back in the political arena, and Republicans are happy to cash his checks.
