The Grocery Store Competition Nobody Expected
When you think prediction markets, you probably think betting on elections or sports. Free groceries? Not so much. But here we are.
Polygon (POL)-based Polymarket announced Tuesday it's launching "The Polymarket," a fully-stocked physical store where New Yorkers can grab free groceries. The company says it's already signed the lease after months of planning, with a grand opening set for Feb. 12.
The Manhattan-based startup hasn't revealed the store's exact location yet. According to Business Insider, it'll operate for a limited run—next Thursday through Sunday. Polymarket is also kicking in a $1 million donation to Food Bank For NYC, a nonprofit hunger-relief organization.
Not to be outdone, Kalshi—another major prediction market platform—hosted its own free groceries event Tuesday at Westside Market at 84 3rd Ave. They covered up to $50 per person for a limited time. Kalshi is also headquartered in New York City, for what it's worth.
Channeling Mayor Mamdani?
The timing is interesting. These announcements closely mirror Mayor Zohran Mamdani's campaign proposal to open city-owned grocery stores—one in each borough—designed to bring fresh, affordable food to neighborhoods with limited supermarket access.
Big Business Behind the Giveaways
Kalshi and Polymarket have evolved into the dominant platforms for betting on virtually everything: geopolitics, sports, stock movements, wars, natural disasters—you name it.
The numbers back up their market dominance. According to Dune Analytics, the two platforms control more than 90% of the prediction industry. Their combined monthly notional volumes topped $7 billion in January alone.
