When the Trump administration pulled out of the World Health Organization on January 22, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker decided he wasn't going to wait around for federal leadership. Instead, he's taking matters into his own hands by joining the WHO's Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network directly.

A Direct Challenge to Washington
"By withdrawing from the World Health Organization, Donald Trump has undermined science and weakened our nation's ability to detect and respond to global health threats," Pritzker said in an official announcement from the Illinois Department of Public Health. "I refuse to sit idly by and let that happen."
Pritzker, who's become one of Trump's most outspoken Democratic critics, doubled down on social media, writing: "I refuse to sit by as Donald Trump undermines science and weakens our nation's ability to detect and respond to global health threats."
Illinois is now the second state to make this move, right behind California, which also joined GOARN in January.
What Illinois Actually Gets
Dr. Sameer Vohra, Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, explained the practical benefit: "Disease knows no borders, and Illinois is taking decisive steps to strengthen our preparedness. Joining GOARN connects us to global experts, rapid alerts, and real-time intelligence."
GOARN brings together over 300 technical institutions and networks worldwide, all focused on spotting outbreaks early, confirming threats, and mobilizing fast responses to international public health emergencies.
