President Donald Trump isn't backing down from his immigration enforcers, even as controversy swirls around two fatal shootings in Minneapolis.
Trump took to social media to voice support for Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and border czar Tom Homan, both of whom have become lightning rods following the deaths of residents Alex Pretti and Renee Good at the hands of federal agents.
The situation with Pretti, a nurse, has proven particularly problematic for Noem. She initially claimed Pretti threatened officers with a weapon, but multiple videos tell a different story—showing the licensed gun owner was disarmed by law enforcement before any shots were fired.
Meanwhile, the FBI is investigating Good's January 7 shooting. The DHS maintains that Good was attempting to run over law enforcement officers when an ICE agent opened fire. Her family and local leaders aren't buying that explanation.
Trump's public backing comes as both officials navigate intensifying scrutiny over immigration enforcement tactics. Homan, who Trump sent to Minneapolis to calm things down, has since announced plans to reduce the federal agent presence in the city.
The deaths have triggered protests and demands for policy reform, putting DHS methods under a microscope. How the FBI's investigation into Good's shooting concludes could reshape the department's leadership dynamics going forward.
